Getting eyedrops into a fiesty two year old - any tips?

Help! We've got fucithalmic so it's more of a cream to go in, rather than drops (have done drops but infection back again). Any hints - he screws his eyes up so tightly that getting the lower lid out a little is just about impossible. I'm thinking of trying when he's asleep but he sleeps on his tummy so I'll have to turn him and he'll probably wake. Suggestions appreciated .

Sadly, the only way I found was brute force and a hard heart.

nickiey · 04/02/2006 18:32

shock him while he is screwing his eyes shut with say and ice cube on his tummy-just to get him to forget about his eyes and think about the ice cube long enough for his eyelids to relax.

jampots · 04/02/2006 18:32

haha Cod! Exactly what I was thinking.

Other way would be to just pin him down and prize his eye open but possibly more invasive than you would wish for

Sweets - LOL! I can guarantee they won't work - even telling him to look at my pink nose with purple and green spots doesn't arouse his curiousity enough to tempt his eyes open . Like the ice cubes idea Nickiey - Jampots, pinning him down and prising them open is pretty much what we're doing BUT he's got them so tight that I've to unroll quite a bit of flesh before hitting the eyelashes IYKWIM. Anyway, will do a mixture of a vice-like grip and an icecube en-route to bed.

Thanks!!

if you dont want to wrap him up in a towel and cuddle hime tight, I suggest waiting till hes deeply asleep and then pull his bottom eyelid down, apply one line of the cream. It works best at night as this is when the eyes can become dry.
Good luck

I got dd to lie down on her back and hold a new bag of buttons for when the drops were in.

JoolsToo · 04/02/2006 18:39

I agree Soupy - sad but true

Grrr ... ice didn't work, he just screamed and screwed his little face up even tighter! Just tried now as he's sound asleep but as soon as he felt me pull his eye, he screwed them tight and turned onto his tummy, the monkey. Guess I'm just going to have another shot at bedtime and even if I just get it on his eyelashes, hopefully some will find it's way in. Might be reverting to Cod's sweets in the morning!

Oh - I'm not so bad a Mummy that I tried the ice when he was asleep, we did that after dinner. I meant that I just tried Chapsmum's idea!

I'm having the same problems getting eye drops into my 3 year old. It's amazing just how tight they can screw their eyes isn't it?

Millie1 · 05/02/2006 10:48

Unreal Northerner! Though feeling sorry for myself today as mine are 10 times worse than his!

no tips on getting them to keep eyes open but the best way I've found is to kneel on the floor and get them to lay down with their head on your lap looking up at you.

Thanks Cupcakes!

If you get them to lie on sofa with eyes closed, and put drops into cornor of eyes (near nose) and tell then what you are doing, then get them to open and close there eyes the liquid goes in. Good Luck.
