you should have an information leaflet to give you this info. or will get one when you get your app-when my dad has went he has been given a mild sedative -which promotes temporary amnesia -useful so you dont remember the experience as much -but he has had to be picked up.
good luck i know it's not nice but health is so important.

I had this done last week and it wasn't too bad. They dye the cervix and look at it with a microscope, then if treatment is needed you have a local anaesthetic and they burn away the cells. You will bleed after and I felt sore but nothing too awful, they recommend you don't drive as you will feel a little shaky and sore. But good luck, you will be fine.

curly-I doubt that your Dad had a colposcopy!

OP-I had one a few years ago.

TBH-the main thing that I remember is that the thought of it was a lot worse than the actual thing.

The staff were lovely & one stayed by my head holding my hand as I was so nervous.

IIRC it did feel the same as a smear in that a speculum is used-but once that was in, no other feelings as the colposcope was used.

I had CIN II & laser treatment was done there & then.

A local anaesthetic given-which I did not feel at all.

The worst thing was the smell, & being on my back with legs in stirrups.

Had back ache when I got up & felt woozy from being in that postion-but rode my bike home!

Had period pains & heavy bleeding for a couple of days-due to the treatment not the procedure iyswim.

have a read of this site which is the colposcopists' society with information for women going for investigation and treatment.

Plan to have a lift or a taxi as if you have a treatment then driving isn't recommended.

Thanks everyone.i have come to the conclusion I'm going to worry no matter what.ive heard that there is still a chance you can have cervical cancer, does anyone know if there are any stats as to the % of women who end up with cervical cancer from severe dysklirosis?

There are far more women with severe dyskaryosis and CIN3 (which is what the anticipated histology would show) than there are with cervical cancer each year. National statistics publication 2010-11
Page 37 there were around 17,000 women having severe dyskaryosis and 619 having a result of ?invasive carcinoma on their cytology. In 2009 there was around 2000 cervical cancer registrations and about 20,000 CIN3
There is a small possibility that the investigation will show something worse than the cytology.
The main thing is not to worry, that its been picked up and you're going to be investigated.
There's a forum called Jo's trust for women with pre-cancerous and cancerous cervical conditions.

I had one whilst pregnant and they gave me an epidural so i did not feel anything. They had to keep me in overnight though rather than getting away the same day.
