For now, drink lots - a hot drink if you have something that won't keep you awake and have a warm shower or bath or use a hot water bottle on your abdomen. In future, stay hydrated, eat plenty of fruit and veg and make sure there is some good oil in your diet and if that isn't doing the trick, use a stool softener like dulco-ease (don't use a laxative because that will just add more pain behind the constipation.)

ouryve · 26/03/2012 21:56

Take regular codeine, btw, so sympathise and I'm definitely not laughing. Much.

mummybookworm · 26/03/2012 22:01

Apply Sudocreme liberally to ahem sore area. just speaking from experience

RecursiveMoon · 26/03/2012 22:03

Go to your GP, they'll probably prescribe lactulose (stool softener).

My GP told me that I was constipated while she was doing my smear test Blush.

ohshame · 26/03/2012 22:05

thanks. but blardy ell is it ever going to be able to erm get out ? i think i really am sh**ting bricks Sad

You could try a double espresso? DH rocked up with a flask of espresso in order to break me out of hospital after I'd had DS (they wouldn't let me go home until I'd pood).

Or lots of grapes? Just whatever usually gets you going usually!

Whitershadeofpale · 26/03/2012 22:10

Have you tried pushing on your perineum. I know it sounds gross but I get this sometimes and I think it helps the angle or something and it comes out easier Blush

RecursiveMoon · 26/03/2012 22:10

Crikey, you're not the poo troll are you Shock?

PandaG · 26/03/2012 22:13

In the short term you could try inserting a finger or 2 into the vagina, and pushing through the wall between that and the rectun to help it out. Maybe combined with the other hand pressing on the perineum.

Longer time, agree, try to increase your fluid intake significantly

lisad123 · 26/03/2012 22:14

things that we used with dd was ensure knees were at 90 degree angle, so put feet on a little stool. Blow out, its impossible to hold on to poo while breathing out. Meds.
poor you :(

MildredH · 26/03/2012 22:18

Poor thing- its nasty. Try prunes or prune juice if you can get them. Work pretty quickly..

Codeine actually increases constipation. Sounds like impacted poo to me. Lactulose can be bought across the counter and it works well within 24 hours. And it worked well for my post csec constipation. I would say smoke a cig and you would be sorted in half a min but that would be poor advice from an ex smoker Smile. Espresso, lactulose should work. And see a GP if it does not.
Poor you. I have sympathies...as I was in your position 2 yrs ago - had not 'gone' for 5 days and the discomfort was horrible, pain due to csec while on the wc did not help either.
Hth.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 26/03/2012 22:26

Are you on pain meds? I had a similar thing last Christmas. Couldn't leave the bathroom but nothing happening iyswim. Agony and Shock.

Only thing that eventually worked after half an hour's inneffectual heaving and crying was to push it back inside - seemed to trigger the right response and let's just say it was very moving Blush.

Took a good few weeks to get back to normal, though.

Monkalonsom · 26/03/2012 22:26

Eat lots of pears and dried apricots. It's a long term thing, remember and your body is out of balance so you may need some help to regulate your self again...(acupuncture, reflexology or some such therapy). It shouldn't be like that for you. Poor thing. Good luck.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 26/03/2012 22:28

Soaked linseeds twice a day helped normalise things. Has the texture of wallpaper paste but you just knock it back.

ouryve · 26/03/2012 22:40

MaMattoo- that's what I meant - missed out the "I"! If I go through a patch of bad joint pain, I usually end up dealing with constipation.

Also forgot the advice about sitting with feet up - I put mine on the kids' bathroom step stool that they no longer need. One good bit of advice from embarrassing bodies - it actually really helps you to just breathe it out. (And yes, after my most recent bad patch, i did find myself standing up, leaning forwards and swaying my hips just as if I was in labour. Gravity, as well as lubrication, is your friend!)

ohshame · 26/03/2012 23:36

thankyou , what would i do without mumsnet ! dh has got me some senokot , not sure if thats the right thing as i do have the urge to go iyswim

think i will have to get something from the g.p in the morning.
i recently had a worsening of acid reflux plus anemia (stopped the iron 3 months ago) and the doctor suggested a colonoscopy but i didnt go for it . now i am slightly worried !

As someone who has suffered on and off with bowel problems since having my kids I would recommend a glycerin suppository to clear yourself out _ buy them at any chemists- and then in the longer term drink a lot of fluid and eating fruit/veggies - and a glass of prune juice every night before bed. Hope that helps Minnie x

astreetcarnamedknackered · 27/03/2012 10:27

I second prunes.

PeachyPossum · 27/03/2012 19:53

I would do the 'oscopy. Nothing at all to worry about and peace of mind after - the idea is worse than the actual thing!

submarine · 27/03/2012 21:02

maybe Im too late, but for immedite relief the glycerine suppositories work in 5 mins, you can buy them at supermarkets, chemist etc

hope you are ok now
