Psyllium husks - what the bloody hell?

I bought some psyllium husks as I am not very regular. I bought it from an Indian grocer and the instructions are in gujerati on the box. DP says to put a teaspoon full in a glass of water and knock it back. This I tried but it nearly all came back up again, it was vile.

What are you supposed to do with the bloody things? And does it work?

Err, you could just get the capsules from Holland and Barratt Getorf. Less exotic but waaaay easier.

Do you eat granola or museli, you could add some to that. Or mix it in yogurt.

Conflugenglugen · 25/03/2012 21:06

Fybogel is the same thing, iirc.

Conflugenglugen · 25/03/2012 21:07

I used to use a product from Indian company Dabur, called "Isabgol". Very similar to Fybogel, but cheaper.

Conflugenglugen · 25/03/2012 21:08

And, yes, it does work.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 25/03/2012 21:08

Oh capsules sound better pag, thank you. I will have a look tomorrow.

I can't eat muesli at the mo as am low carbing. Plus urgh at muesli anyway Grin

yes, it is like wallpaper paste. Vile. It works really well but I can't get it down.

I agree, get the capsules.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 25/03/2012 21:09

conflugen that is what I have got - isabogol. How do you take it? It doesn't bloody dissolve and makes me gag.

Ah - okay!

First, I would say that it takes a bit of getting used to. I do remember gagging slightly on it at first. But then I watered it down a bit more, which doesn't really make much difference in terms of effectiveness. If there's residue in the bottom of your glass, just top up with a bit more water, swish it about, then down it. You do get used to it; and it is really, really good.

Conflugenglugen · 25/03/2012 21:13

The other thing that is advised (in terms of ayurveda) for constipation is a mug of hot water first-thing in the morning. Not very pleasant, but when paired with the Isabgol, I bet you will notice a difference pretty quickly.

BellaVita · 25/03/2012 21:13

DH said you have got to stir it very very well. He said the advantage of buying it from an Indian grocers is there are no additives unlike getting it from Holland and Barratt. You also need to take it 45 mins after eating.

In the US you can get it in biscuit form.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 25/03/2012 21:15

Thank you - I will give it a go again. Is it just a teaspoon in a glass of water?

It's really cheap as well - 80p for a great box of it.

I checked my capsules
Physillium husk powder. Capsule shell.

No gagging.

BellaVita · 25/03/2012 21:18

Yes just one teaspoon.

Pagwatch · 25/03/2012 21:22

How is the low carb going getorf?

I am keeping really low on the carb but not allowed to go no carb as my trainer gets really arsy. But it does work doesn't it. I have lost a stone now since the start of the year. Much fitter.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 25/03/2012 21:26

It is going really well pag - I started it on 1st Jan at 12 stone 3 (hideous weight gain from steroids) and with low carbing and doing Jillian Michaels DVDs every day (ish), am down to 10 stone 8. Body fat has reduced from around 30% to just under 20% as well - I am really pleased. It is a good diet, and works really well.

I am glad you are enjoying your personal trainer as well. Getting fit has really cheered me up.
