hi.

I have been taking omeprazole and ranitidine for a number of years because i had a reflux cough, the name laryngopharyngeal reflux was mentioned to me. It got to the point where my windpipe was going into spasm and it stopped me breathing, making me gasp for breath, rather like you would see in whooping cough. I couldnt drive for fear of a spasm.

it had gone on for years prior to this but steadily got worse and worse until finally a gp put me on the two drugs which seemed to stop the symptoms., i understand they are proton pump inhibitors and stop my stomach from making acid.

however, now, whenever i get a common cold, i always get those same symptoms back. I get a "raw" feeling in my neck, pain in the neck, lose my voice completely, and get the same "whooping" cough back along with the spasms which make it impossible to breath for minutes at a time. It is very distressing and frightening.

I go to the gp, who puts me on antibiotics, but they never seem to want to do any investigation into the cause, and im a total wimp and darent have the camera down my throat, so ive never pushed it.

but i am scared i am going to end up with throat cancer or barratts oesophaguss. I dont think my gp sees the links because i see a different gp every time but with the same symtoms, and although the attacks are less now im taking the meds, it still happens on average every 6 months whenever i get a cold. Its always the same type of cough and inflammation, always a "whooping" cough with loss of voice, and inflammation around the larynx and oesophagus. It never goes to my chest.

does anyone work in this field or can anyone give me any advice please? I think the symptoms started around 14 years ago, and got progressively worse over time. Ive been on the proton pump inhibitors for about 5 years or so.

thanks

The camera is really, really horrible (it goes up your nose and then into your throat) but I've had it three times and survived (and am a v big wimp!). It's deffo worth going for it so they can have a proper look. No other advice though, sorry, as my issues were not the same as yours.

I had the camera down my gullet (endoscopy) with sedation and I didnt remember a thing and I had been putting it off for ages as I was dreading it. half an hour afterwards I was drinking tea and eating biscuits! Smile

Have the sedation, you will be ok.

It will put your mind at rest.

Good luck x

Hmmm, I'd heard bad tales about the camera and was really worried but it HONESTLY wasn't that bad. You can have it done under general anaesthetic if you're really worried.

You should deffo get it done, but I guess you know that...

KittieCat · 24/03/2012 16:18

Reading Bec's post maybe it isn't as dramatic as a general... I didn't go for that option anyway.

Becaroooo · 24/03/2012 16:26

I was petrified but it was fine, honestly.

I came round as they were pulling the camera out and I remember coughing a bit but thats it.

Elibean · 24/03/2012 16:49

Tell the consultant you have ishoos, and ask for a general anaesthetic Smile

He was a bit sniffy about it (the anaesthetist was lovely though) but I was given one, and didn't regret it. Its a short acting GA, very short acting - literally a few minutes - and it saved me being petrified at a time when I really needed not to be petrified (again).

Its so worth staying on top of chronic things like this - I'm a regular omeprazole taker these days (managed on Zantac for years) and all because of a boring little hiatus hernia. Nothing worse, but I only know this thanks to that camera...

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/03/2012 16:51

You really shouldn't need a general. It's horrible but it's over in moments and soon forgotten.

i am really so phobic about having an endoscopy that it is stopping me from seeing the gp for fear that this is what they will send me for. i think they would need to do a biopsy aswell to rule out barretts.

plus i also fear that the only permanent solution to this issue is to have an operation, which ties the top of the stomach around the bottom of the gullet.

im scared to go. its ridiculous i know. plus i need to get through my probationary period at work before i start asking for time off....i have another 6 months to go.

I can empathise vicar

I put it off for years and the only reason I didnt ask for a GA was that I have 2 young dc to care for so couldnt have one!.

Its not ridiculous to be scared at all, but it is ridiculous to risk your long term health....and remember you would be put on a list for the endoscopy (I waited about 4 months iirc) it wouldnt happen straight away.

Hello Vicarinatutu, i'm really sorry that I don't have any advice or info for you but was perhaps wondering if you have any advice/info for me please if you don't mind?

I am wondering if my child has reflux cough.

My 3yo DS has had a persisitant cough since at least December. He only coughs during the day, all day, and does not cough at night at all. He has been tried on various asthma treatments, inhalers, tablets etc. and also antihistamines which did not work and sometimes made his cough worse (irritated his throat more). His cough either sounds like he is trying to clear his throat or sounds like he is rattling his ribcage, at different times. He is also prone to croup and chest infections and I have heard that there can be a link between reflux and chest infections.

Also when he was a baby he did have reflux, he didn't vomit but he did have excess stomach acid for which he was prescribed gaviscon and rinitidine from being one day old until he was about one year perhaps.

There seems to be very little information on reflux cough that I can find and not many people seem to know much about it so I just wondered if you had any advice or information for me really. I am due back at the GP's with him next week to ask him if he thinks the cough might be reflux cough.

Kind regards
