I've had ibs for several years and unfortunately the only thing that works for me is medication. You can get herbal remedies, but none worked for me.

Was recommended yoga and Pilates by one doctor as a way to strengthen my stomach muscles which can help. Problem is I've broken my knee and can't try it!

Last bit of advice is to be careful how much fruit and veg you eat. Sounds weird to say don't eat your five a day but I'm always worse the day after veg heavy meals!

Thank you .. I was drinking peppermint tea but a dietician said this could be aggravating it, so it kind of leaves you not knowing what to do for the best. My diet is so limited now .

Try not to cut too much out of your diet at one time. If you do that it's difficult to learn what aggravates your stomach. Generally fatty foods are a problem for most sufferers and I spent a year off dairy to try and help. Ended up at a vegetarian wedding where everything had cheese in it. I ate it all and felt fine.

So don't do anything drastic!

As for dieticians, the thing they forget is that everyone is different. Ibs is a name that means "you've got stomach problems and we don't know why or what causes it".

Keep a food and bowel movement diary (grim I know) and this will help you keep track of causes and effects.

Try cutting out peppers (the red/green/yellow ones). They make me very ill (!) and are known to irritate ibs.

Reading with interest as I have the same problems. Up and down over the years but it can be very restrictive. I take anti anxiety meds now and am a lot better for it but still have days when I feel I can't go out. :(
