Please don't worry. Im no dr but my aunt broke her back lifting a heavy table. First off rest. Is it a recent injury? Get x-ray make sure your spine is ok. BEFORE they recommend physio. Otherwise if musculature then obviously rest, rubs, ibuprofen.

Basically get rl help. Here is an unMN hug too. Bear

Streetcar thanks for replying. I have been very attention seeking and put up a couple of other threads more about my medication issue. I have been like this for a week and then on Friday last week had an anaphylactic, severe reaction to something and ended up in hospital for 2 days which has done my back no good at all.

As a result of the allergy I cannot take brufen or Naproxen. Also I have tried paracetamol and codeine today to no effect. I have some Tramadol but am loathe to take it as I am on Citalopram and this may be a problem.

I am in such agony so I'm going to take it anyway. Past caring now.

Saw the doctor who told me to carry on and rest in between but this seems to make me so much worse even if I do the slightest thing. I felt slightly better yesterday but now feel much worse which is gutting. Doc said I didn't need an x-ray but I am going to insist on it because I can't carry on like this.

Sorry to moan and I don't normally post like this but human interaction makes me feel better!

Thanks for the hugs!!

Hi veteran of severe back pain here, my ds cracked my pelvis and misaligned my spine whilst I was pregnant. Has your dr said what is wrong? MRI is often much more effective with diagnosing issues u usually have a wait though. Sorry to hear she medications crap sounds like you need to see your dr again ASAP. As painful as it is I usually find-and i am not a dr or anything like!- that the more I try to do the better ie 20 minds pushing through the pain and 30 mins resting. When I have a bad flare up and literally cannot stand the dr uses drugs to block my nerves to kill the pain, a referral to a pain clinic would be the next stage in that case. I'm really sorry your in such pain sending hugs and a Smile

Mama1980 · 21/03/2012 14:57

Oh and moan all you like I know just how much it can hurt

itchitch · 21/03/2012 15:11

Thanks Mama, sounds painful what happened to you. How are you now? I am going to call the doctor again. I am very worried about taking Tramadol but am desperate. Still in two minds about it.

I felt so much better yesterday and just can't believe how bad it is today. The more I do the worse it is. Have you tried to work with your problems or can't you work at all? I'm bloody terrified I'm going to have to give up my job which I love. So scared.

Oh and thanks for permission to moan!! x

I had back problem for about three years. At times I would be in so much pain I couldn't walk, including for the whole of a holiday we had been looking forward to for 6 months.

I had physio to get me mobile and stuck with the exercises but I still had problems. Pilates helped a bit too. The only thing that helped was getting a personal trainer to work out a routine and sticking to it. I got a much stronger fore. I improved my strength and flexibility and now, although I still occasionally have problems I am fine for 95% of the time.

Can you get to a physio? Could you ask your Gp to recommend one?

Oh yes. The plank. I did four of those this morning.

BlingLoving · 21/03/2012 15:31

Can you pay for private medical care? If you can, I cannot recommend a chiropracter highly enough. They need to be reputable so please ensure anyone you see is a registered member of the British Chiropractic Association. Even better if you can get a recommendation from somewhere (I can make recommendations in South West London, Surrey or the City of London).

A chiropracter will most liikely take an x-ray as well to assess any damage that might be done.

I have found them to be incredibly helpful in the past. I was originally recommended to see one after a family friend was saved from serious spinal surgery which would have had him in hospital for at least three months by seeing a chiropracter.

itchitch · 21/03/2012 15:44

Thanks guys, you have given me some hope. I have been ok up until today in my head but have now crashed. We don't have much money but will look into a chiropracter and ring my GP again. They are sodding useless and don't seem to want to take it seriously. Told me to go and pay for physio as there is a 3 month waiting list here.

I need a wee but am too scared to try and get up. I wish I could take brufen or Naproxen etc but can't due to the allergy scare. What a horrible week and am feeling really low now.

Aww hon hang in there. If the pain gets too bad call a ambulance-then they will have to help you. At my worst post baby I couldn't move, even turn my head without agony. My ds lay on my chest 24/7 the only way I could hold him. I am ok now about 75%of the time I have good and bad days. I am lucky in that I am a phd student/ museum researcher since ds born so I can still work from home mostly. I would not be able to do a active 9-5 job day in day out. But everyone is different and u will learn to tolerate the pain more - my ds is my greatest motivator, I hate to let him down because I am feeling crappy. Did your dr tell you what he thought is wrong?

itchitch · 21/03/2012 16:23

Have just rung the Chiropracter down the hill (who are registered with the BCA) and they have asked me to go down now so off I go.

Will report back later. Thanks Mama and it sounds like you went through hell.

Many thanks all xx

Good luck let us know how I get on

Mama1980 · 21/03/2012 17:08

How you Smile

BlingLoving · 21/03/2012 17:10

Oh, that's good. Let us know how it goes.

I do believe strongly in chiropractic, but you must be comfortable with the practionner so bear that in mind when you decide whether to continue treatment with him/her.

FreckledLeopard · 21/03/2012 17:13

I had a herniated disc - the pain was horrible and seemed endless. NHS were useless and physio made it worse. Thankfully I was able to use private healthcare who sorted it almost immediately with steroid injection and epidural.

Can you insist on an MRI scan, as that shows way more than an X-ray (my X-ray showed nothing - MRI showed bulging disc).

itchitch · 21/03/2012 19:12

Hi all, feeling a bit more hopeful now. The Chiropractor was lovely and put my mind at rest that I hadn't done too much damage. Everything I said to him pointed to inflamation in the Sacral (sp) joint putting pressure on the nerve. He said that he is confident he can sort it. He took my history and examined me and it all seemed to add up to his initial diagnosis.

He has told me to rest for about 10-15 minutes then walk around for about 5-10 minutes and use an ice pack.

In desperation I took a Tramadol which hasn't really impacted on the pain but no strange effects so that's good.

I'm going back tomorrow for first treatment but am worried about the money really. Will suck it up though in order to sort this out.

Just want to say thank you to you all as you have helped me through a really bad day. Thankfully, I have a lovely partner who helps out a lot too.

Freckled, what were your symptoms of a herniated disc? Hope you are ok now.

Will update and wish you all a lovely evening xxx

BlingLoving · 21/03/2012 19:19

Oh excellent. I had terrible inflamed joints while pregnant and chiro helped. Def keep us updated.

itchitch · 21/03/2012 20:16

Thanks Bling. Hope it helps. I do believe in it so that helps. I've got my ice pack on and doing my routine but it's still bloody agony! Can't believe the Tramadol didn't help although it prob took the edge off it for about 10 mins!

Mama1980 · 21/03/2012 20:35

That's good news, let us know how you get on. The moving I know is agony but it does help in the long run not to allow the inflamed joints/muscles a chance to stiffen up then they are harder to release again. Take care Smile

itchitch · 21/03/2012 21:12

Thanks Mama. Yes the moving is hell but I'm being good and doing it. At least I've stopped blubbing now! I wonder why and then I remember what kind of week it's been what with hospital stay and looking like the elephant man and being unable to breathe!

Time to get up again. Hope your back is in a good place at the moment x

Quick update - went to the Chiropractor on Thursday again and he did this almighty crunch thing on me which I was not expecting! Scary but it seemed to help. I felt much better yesterday, although still in pain and am going again next week. I am taking his advice and resting for 20 minutes, walking around for 10 and then resting, ice pack etc. Do not sit down, just walk, stand or lie down. Only taking paracetamol now for pain so feel I am on the right track.

It's not fun being stuck indoors the whole time. I'm going a bit nuts! MN, telly and getting paperwork stuff done is keeping me slightly sane. Will make a start on doing some recipe research so I have a bank of recipes to call on. Sad eh!

Hope you are all ok x
