Why has my DD always got a sore bum and bits?

She is almost 4 and completely dry in the daytime but does wear nappies at night. She permanently has a sore bottom and/ or sore girly-bits and I don't know why. I've changed washing powder but that's had no effect. Should I take her to the doctor? Or are there any creams that are good? I've used barrier cream, but that doesn't seem to have much impact either.

pants are cotton right?

does she ever get any naked time?

maybe she's just super-sensitive? maybe she has a yeast infection? (canesten cream?)

surplus of ???? I know

hunkermunker · 02/02/2006 19:38

Has she got thrush?

sunchowder · 02/02/2006 19:40

Aveeno Oatmeal bath would be great for that (at least once a day) and lots of naked time would help also. The air helps a lot. If she has been on and off antibiotics, it could be a yeast thing too. See if this helps her.

Even though you've changed washing powder, what about fabric softner? Also some disposables can irritate - have you tried switching brands of those? Don't forget things like bubblebaths (my ds comes up in a rash from anything Johnsons) or soap as well.

I've switched to using 'Surcare' on all underwear and towels and have bought a mild organic shampoo/bodywash from the health shop and seem to have got Dhs, DSs and my problems under control.

Twiglett · 02/02/2006 19:46

actually just running the bathwater through a sock filled with oatmeal (porridge oats) or adding bicarb of soda to the bath could help with the symptoms

chicagomum · 02/02/2006 19:46

I guess as she is dry during the day she is using the toilet. Does she wipe herself or do you do it? I've found that dd was getting sore and realised that it was because she wasn't wiping properly and so leaving herself damp (basically giving herself the equivalent of nappy rash).

Caligula · 02/02/2006 20:38

Naked time. No, not really, doesn't have it. So I'll try that. Will also try the porridge in sock (what odd things one does find out on Mumsnet, to be sure). Will also be careful about whether she's wiping herself properly.

Thanks.

Also..does she wear tights during the day. That can exaccerbate things. Fresh air needs to circulate in the nether regions!

Caligula · 02/02/2006 20:45

Normally she wears trousers (she prefers them because they're easier to pull up than tights). But I'll stop putting her in dresses for the time being.

My DD 3 has been sore on and off and I realised that when she is at nursery she is not wiping herself properly. I tested this by telling her to wipe herself after going to the loo and immediately after I wiped her and she was still wet. I have since explained the importance of proper wiping and she makes more of an effort now.

Caligula - Does she complain that her bits hurt her? Do they appear red sometimes? I started a thread on this a while ago and the silence was deafening!!! My DD has this problem. (only sore bits though, not bottom) She is nearly 6, dry day and night but has always suffered. She will wake crying in the night because she is so uncomfortable sometimes. I have tried everything to try and find out what is causing it. She has just been referred to a paediatrician because the GP has not got a clue. Am watching this thread with great interest.

my dd had this for a long time,we had lots of drs appt/specialist/private , you named it we tried it inc canesten as we kept being told it was fungal..it would go away for a while then reappear with a vengeance , anyway in exasperation [plus i believe more in complementary therapies] we went to a recommended homeopath who diagnosed her with candida and treated her and within 10 days she was clear and we had nothing for about 18 mths when she ahd a flare up as shed eaten too may sweet things[shes sensitive to sugar because of the candida..plus mushrooms, yeast] so we cut back and then she`s fine ..it took us 3yrs to get her dx and we get it cleared in 10 days..does your dd get worse if she eats too much sugar or anything that might have it in?

Distracted · 02/02/2006 21:38

My dd is nearly 4 and we've had the same problem on and off since last summer. Initially I took her to the doctors and they did a swab (just of the surface) and it turned out she had a strep A infection, which was treated and cleared up. However, it came back again but next time I did a swab and a urine sample all came back clear so I haven't taken her back again.

She does often look really red and when she complains that it stings then I put better botty balm on (which has tea tree in) before she goes to bed and that seems to help. I have wondered whether it is linked to not wiping properly as well, particularly on the days she goes to nursery.

Re. oatmeal - should I put Aveeno cream on does anyone know? I use that on the children for eczema and it contains oatmeal.

poppiesinaline · 02/02/2006 21:40

mmmm haven't even thought of sugar. Will keep an eye now and see if there is a link. Def worse when she has anything like citrus.

Caligula · 02/02/2006 21:54

Might be worth keeping a food diary to see if there is a link

Dd is also under investigation for this and she has had two recent proven UTI's. I have followed all the advice, but she still gets sore. She has seen a paed and has now got an appointment for further investigation which involves a kidney scan and also having a dye injected into her and then to wee in front of a camera to see that she is emptying her bladder properly and that nothing is running back up the urinary tract. Tbh. I'm not really looking forward to it.

HELP - 1st time on this message thingee but I found this thread and I'm really worried about my two boys (2 & 3.5 yrs old). They have a rash on the bottoms - red & sore. After a couple of misdiagnosis - the doc took a swab and said it was Strep. He's not great on over information and told us to just give them the Penicillin (which was a nightmare to get them to take - any tips on that would be wonderful) and it went away. I also made up some almond oil with tee tree & lavender which seems to sooth. But now it's back (after a nasty cold) and we are on the penicillin again - the boys spit out the medicine (I now how important it is to finish a course) the docs not keen to prescribe anything else and I don't want to keep on giving them Penicillin all the time (the last course only finished 3 wks ago). Sorry to go on but I can't find anything about this and the poor things are having real problems at night.

My dd1 is 5 and often has the same problem. Sometimes if they wee even a little in their knickers and stay in them all day, the dampness can cause soreness. I now put vaseline on her as a barrier cream before she goes off to school. She's now usually quite good at making sure she's dry after the toilet. She was tested for strep and we had antibiotics and it cleared up a bit. But it came back. She hates wearing knickers anyway and will take them off when she gets home. I hardly ever put her in tights or trousers for school as it's usually really hot in the clasrms. The dr said it was very common amongst young girls cause they're often fiddling down there and strep spreads really easily. Re - aveeno - don't see how it would cause any harm - if it works, then fine, though it might be better getting something like 'Eulax' (sp?) since this is for vaginal itching, I think
