Husband nasty taste in mouth

DH has been complaining of an unpleasant, chemically, almost metallic taste in his mouth about 2 minutes after eating or drinking anything. He has had gum problems but that seems to be sorted out, no sore throat/inflamed tonsils. Could it be a digestive thing? Any ideas?

Could be a tooth related problem - I had a funny taste when my tooth "died" and needed root canal work.

LadyDamerel · 20/03/2012 21:31

Really, really random question but has he been eating pine nuts recently?

OohIsThatAFlake · 20/03/2012 21:45

I'm going to send him to the dentist first, then the doctors as my first thought was that it might be related to dental problems.

@LadyDamerel - do elaborate on the pine nuts!

I think there was a rogue batch of pine nuts recently that caused a temporary taste sensation for a few days after eating.

I clicked on this to post about pine nuts, but I see i was beaten to it Grin

If they are only slightly out of date, I get a weird but horrible taste if I eat anything with sugar in. The worst thing of all is chocolate, which tastes of metal and chemicals. It takes about 10 to 15 days to get myself right again.

Popoozle · 20/03/2012 22:10

Is he drinking any more than usual (any fluids I mean, not just alcohol [smile)? Has he lost weight without dieting? A metallic taste in the mouth can be a sign of diabetes. It probably isn't, but might be worth checking if the trip to the dentist doesn't help.

jade80 · 20/03/2012 22:11

I had this from pinenuts. Apparently some types can cause it. Lasted about 5 days- very irritating!

Popoozle · 20/03/2012 22:12

Terrible use of emoticons & brackets - should have been a Smile.

timetosmile · 20/03/2012 22:15

All good adviceabove!
Dental MOT, maybe some basic blood tests at GPs eg for diabetes.
Many prescription medications as well as over-the-counter stuff can cause it, so 'ask your friendly local pharmacist' too.
Acid reflux and also postnasal drip..a kind of sinusitis/allergy type sniffy symptom can both cause it too, so your GP might want to discuss those too.
Does he have bad breath? Or is it just him aware of a taste alteration?

confusedpixie · 20/03/2012 22:33

As soon as I saw the title I thought pine nuts too! I had it for over a week and came on here to ask and got the answer. I'd munched on an entire packet of the damned things over two days Blush

It's really nasty and alters the taste of everything. I had this from a bog standard, in-date pack from Morrisons too, it's something that affects many it seems!

LadyDamerel · 21/03/2012 00:01

Pine Mouth explanation.

DH had it a few months ago, as did a friend of his but it was exactly what you are describing and gradually wore off over a couple of weeks.

cardamomginger · 21/03/2012 09:00

Thought pine nuts too! DH had this. It lasted about 2-3 weeks after eating the pine nuts. Only caused by Chinese pine nuts, apparently (the majority of pine nuts in this country are Chinese). He can eat Pakistani ones just fine. Odd.....

OohIsThatAFlake · 21/03/2012 09:37

Now I suspect he has a secret pine nut addiction!

He recently had a kidney stone and was advised to drink lots of water - he hardly drinks any at all, just a few cups of tea/coffee int'office. I will start nagging gently reminding him again. He had blood tests after the kidney stone passed so I presume diabetes was ruled out then but tbh I have suspected he might have it as he is a tad overweight and has what I think are 'diabetes eyes' but no other symptoms afaik.

He does sometimes have bad breath (goodness, I'm making him sound really attractive now, aren't I?!) and so does his father - so bad I can barely sit next to FIL - but I put that down to the gum problem and presumed it would go when the problem is sorted.

He also suffers from indigestion quite a lot and what sounds like acid reflux.

Writing all this down has made me realise I need to get him in to the doctors for a MOT.

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to read and reply to this - I am very grateful to you all

:)

Hi does he have any other symptoms? It's just that I remember my Dad having a metallic taste in his mouth after eating & he was diagnosed with anaemia after a routine blood test. The strange taste went when he started his treatment.
