I've just got a letter from school about fluoridated milk - the school are offering milk with fluoride in it instead of plain cow's milk.

My dd cleans her teeth (well I do it) twice a day with "milk teeth" toothpaste as she doesn't like strong mint flavours or any of the other childrens tothpaste.

Is she getting enough fluoride from this or does she need extra?

How much fluoride should a 3 year old be getting?

Any help will be really appreciated

Bumping, as I would like to know - am sure I was given fluoride suppliments at school(1970's), which actually made my teeth weaker!

Anyone know about this?

Fluoridation has made no difference to rates of tooth decay in the USA. In Canada, water is not fluoridated for a number of reasons.

Worldwide, dentists agree that topical fluoride (ie in toothpaste or in gel trays) is far more effective.

Over-consumption of fluoride in child hood can cause fluoride mottling in adult teeth.

if it was me I wouldn't allow my child to have flouridated milk.

They don't need any more flouride than topical toothpaste gets. There will be some it will benefit ,who don't brush their kid's teeth.

Where are you Jensmum?
As long as the toothpaste your child uses is fluoridated, I wouldn't go for the fluoridated milk, too.

As long as your using a toothpast that is at least 1000 ppm (colgate kids is only 500ppm) You have no need for fluoride spmts. (health board reccomendations for scotland whos water contains no fluoride.)

starlover · 02/02/2006 19:09

also bear in mind that your water may be fluoridated... if you overload her then, as highlander said, that can affect teeth (not in a good way!)

so... no, i wouldn't take the milk

I'm in Manchester and the water contains Fluoride anyway.

She's really good at getting her teeth cleaned so I think she's getting enough, so I'm going to tell the school no to fluoridated milk

Thanks for all the replies

my dd was put on flouride drops, we add 7 in her milk each day and use a low flouride toothpaste. the dentist said this area doesn't contain enough. she was put on them from 6 months (before she got teeth) as she gets monitored more closely as she has a heart condition and a cleft of the soft palate. you might also be able to ask the chemist about the levels of flouride in your area, our chemist gave me the drops for about £3 when they ran out.
