Bad back and can't take Naproxen. Can I take Tramadol with Citalopram

Hi all. Have been to the docs this morning as my back is agony. I can't take Naproxen as it may have been implicated in an anaphylactic reaction over the weekend.

She has prescribed me Tramadol. I have done some research on it and it seems that it's not good to take if you are already taking Citalopram.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I am rapidly running out of options here. I will call my doctor back as I really don't want to take any further risks at the moment.

Many thanks.

I'm not advising you to but I used to take two Tramadol in the morning and my Citalopram at night with no ill effects. GP was aware of me taking them and said the risk was minute. Hope this helps.

Tramadol acts partly on the same bit of your brain as the citalopram does so can increase all the side effects of the citalopram. If your citalopram dose is quite low and you don't have any side effects currently you can possibly try it and see. However, codeine ( if you have no allergies and are not already taking it) would be a safer bet.

Do you have any other medical conditions/ take any other meds?

I take a low dose of citalopram, and my gp said it would be fine for me to take tramadol, when I have a bad back. So maybe ok if you are on a low dose?

itchitch · 21/03/2012 12:37

Hi Hazey. I take 30mg so that's not really a low dose. I feel shit today - took my daughter to school this morning and had tears in my eyes the pain was so bad. So worried this is me now and it won't go away. I really am not coping with the pain today. I have bought some paracetamol and codeine to try before trying Tramadol so will see how that goes. This is bloody horrendous Sad.

Hmm, that is difficult. Have you managed to ask the dr, whether it would be ok? You have all my sympathy, it is horrendous, and I find when my back is bad, Tramadol is the only thing that will cut through it. Paracetemol and Codeine make me very dizzy so I was very relieved when gp prescribed Tramadol.

I hope you find something to help.

Hi Hazey, yes I did speak to the doc and she said it would be ok for me to take Tramadol. I have been resisting but this afternoon the pain was so awful I took one. All seems ok so far but it hasn't really touched the pain very much. I only had the guts to take one!

In desperation, I went to see a Chiropractor today. I rang them and they asked me to come straight down which was great. He is not too worried about it and says it is nothing sinister and can be fixed (fingers crossed!)

So feeling slightly more positive despite the ongoing agony! x
