DP had a stomach ulcer. we only found out when he threw up 4 pints of blood and was rushed into hospital. mostly he was advised to eat bland foods and stay clear of fizzy drinks, alcohol and aspirin. i remember tomatos, citrus fruit and spicy foods were definitely not good foods to it.
i hope your DS gets better soon.

Has he had a blood test to check for H. pylori? This bacteria can cause stomach ulcers and is easily eradicated with antibiotics. I had it in my early 20s - I thought I was a bit young for a stomach ulcer.

Thank you..sounds horrific lilacbump has he recovered since?

ds only went to the doctors this morning, but he is at boarding school so I didn't go so don't know precisely the details she just said he had been prescribed something like omni pren (probably not that at all) and that he had tenderness at the top of the stomach, I'm not sure how they check for ulcers? i don't think he had a blood test as he hates medical matters and he would have mentioned it.

oh yes, DP recovered well. it happened about 2.5 years ago now. they just treated it with medication and did an endoscopy a while after he came out of hospital to check the ulcer had gone. he's still not allowed to take aspirin or ibuprofen (apparently they treat it as an allergy) but he eats and drinks everything again.

zip, if he's still having pains he could poss be on the wrong medication.
He should as someone else mentioned be tested for helicobactor pylori, this can be done by a breath test.
Zantac is a ppi (proton pump inhibitoer) which controls stomach acid production.
Lansoprazol, losec zoton and the likes are stomach ulcer healing drugs. It is important to find out what he is on. If he is on a PPI and still having pain he should see his gp with a view to being given the medication which will help the ulcer to heal.

Polgara2 · 02/02/2006 21:20

Losec is omeprazole - could it be that?

zippitippitoes · 03/02/2006 09:59

Thank you..I think the one he has been given is probably loxec as she said it was x but also known as y

he has to take it at 8.00am and not take any "stomach remedies"

I shall see him tomorrow so will be able to find out properly

I am suffering guilty motherness on two counts, one failure to get him ever on to a balanced diet and being really angry when he rang me on wednesday morning to say he wasn't going to go to his college interview that day because he had terrible stomach pains this week and they were getting worse.

I assumed he was being lazy

make sure he has the h. pylori test. he could have a breath test if a blood test scares him too much (but really, he's a big boy and should pull himself together and get a blood test done).
I had a stomach ulcer for 4 miserable years as a teenager until I finally came across a doctor who had heard of h.pylori. A few tests and a one week course of triple therapy (2 different antibiotics, H2 blocker) later I was cured.
It's so terribly painful but is almost always due to h.pylori which can be easily eradicated. Really, this should have been the first thing for his GP to check. I had gastritis last year and they sent me for a breath test as a matter of course.

zippitippitoes · 03/02/2006 11:03

I shall follow the test for h. pylori up. I'm not sure whether he's still registered with a gp locally or only at school which makes it a bit more awkward.

I took him to his interview on weds and I thought he was having histrionics but clearly not.

On the bright side he really liked it there and if I hadn't put my foot down and made him go then I think he would have been less likely to go at all.

ds didn't come home for the weekend preferring to sty with his girl friend in London but says he is feeling better..has the medication dealt with the symptoms rather than the the pronlem so we need to to proceed with further tests or wait unitl he finishes the course of emdication?

Zip, If he has helicobacter this is a bacteria which causes ulcers, it can only be erradicated by a combintation of ulcer healing drugs and antibiotics. So in short yes the losec will heal this ulcer, but will not stop the problem re-occuring if he doies have hcp.
It can be transmitted through salyva so his girlfriend should be tested too...

zippitippitoes · 06/02/2006 09:58

I shall make sure he is followed up further then. thank you (and his girlfriend)
