breathing is hard work sometimes

At work today had builders in - the dust or plastering chemicals or something, set my asthma off badly.

Have spent the whole day breathless, wheezey, coughing and having to take big gasps in the middle of sentences despite ventolin and already being on steroids.

Home now (via hosp to visit another MNer in hosp with her asthma - was tempted to jump in to bed with her) and have had nebs and although my chest/shoulders ache then the effort of breathing is now so much easier. Totally don't realise how hard it is until it is better.

You can have my bed, I'm fed up with it!

Yep, it's only when you get better that you realise just how much hard work asthma is. I get really exhausted.

KatyMac · 19/03/2012 23:24

I know

& listening to someone struggling breathing is hard too; at night listening to the not breathing is worse & counting until the next breath, then kicking if it doesn't come soon enough Sad

Asthma is crap

Asthma IS crap, I agree.

Ican't get the video to work, dumb choc phone.
I might ask Doctor about that tomorrow though, or similar, because the gack on my lungs is my main issue.

giraffesCantDonateBoneMarrow · 19/03/2012 23:47

dont think can get it on NHS it seems :( but maybe that flutter thing that advertised inside peak flow monitor packets? or just get a bloomin physio up!! Ask to speak to asthma nurse

OP posts:
NettoSuperstar · 20/03/2012 07:13

I know, god only knows why they aren't getting the physios up.
I mght just start paying random people to punch me in the back.

giraffesCantDonateBoneMarrow · 20/03/2012 07:34

Paying? I offered for free.

KatyMac · 20/03/2012 07:39

DH uses the 'flutter' & he says it really helps if he can't do his physio; but he also says it's hard work

NettoSuperstar · 20/03/2012 08:35

I won't pay you, you're not a random!

I'm going to see if the doctor thinks a flutter would work for me, I really need help clearing my chest

KatyMac · 20/03/2012 08:59

Since DH has been using the Wii his chest has been much easier to clear (mind you it could be the daily antibiotics; they both arrived one Christmas)

magso · 20/03/2012 09:29

What does your dh do with the W11 Katy?
Sorry you are struggling Girraffes. Building work sets me off too. Plaster is very alkali and brick dust irritating. I don't suppose you have the sort of work where you could wear a filter mask and not feel very silly? ( will admit to mask use for housework when i know my lungs are threatening strike action). When I was in the respiratory HD ward they started building work! Made us all worse!
I bought a power breather to try and build up my breathing muscles etc but not sure it has helped. It does seem to cause coughing up fits though! Has any one else tried one. I find saline nebs useful for thinning lung gunk to cough up.

KatyMac · 20/03/2012 09:35

He does bowling or tennis mainly; but really anything to move his arms as that keeps the phlegm moving so he can cough it up

KatyMac · 20/03/2012 09:35

He also does about an hour a day on the exercise bike

NettoSuperstar · 20/03/2012 09:59

I really can't exercise at all, even on a good day.

Anyway, have just seen the doctor and they are letting me home today.

I've been warned it'll be a long, probably slow recovery, and I will need lots of help but so long as I am in my own home, I can cope witth that.

KatyMac · 20/03/2012 10:40

I remember him being like that; since the change in medication he hasn't had a chest infection Shhh and he has built up his exercise

If he has even a hint of a chest he ups his exercise

magso · 20/03/2012 14:41

Oh Netto - good you can go home but do take care not to try to do too much.
As I also cannot exercise perhaps a bit of gentle bowling on (ds's) WII will help KatyMac.

NettoSuperstar · 20/03/2012 16:52

Maybe I should see about getting a Wii?
I know DD would like me to!

giraffesCantDonateBoneMarrow · 20/03/2012 18:34

If you get a wii can I come and play on it - for health reasons obviously!

I am missing my daily visit to the hosp to see you netto.

NettoSuperstar · 20/03/2012 19:05

I'm missing my visit, not missing the hosp though.

I will get a Wii, once I have my free flat screen to put it on Grin

NettoSuperstar · 20/03/2012 19:12
