Newly diagnosed Hypothyroid - advice

Hi, I need some virtual hugs & advice! Diagnosed 2 weeks ago and started medication 100mg Levothyroxine 2 days ago.
TSH 8.5
T4 12.3
Don't even really know what to ask, am in shock!
How long for drugs to kick in? Does dose sound right? Any positive info? All seems a bit gloomy from what I have read, takes ages to get right dose, side effects are worse than no drugs while getting used to them etc!
My symptoms - freezing cold, tired, hazy head, blurred vision, heavy periods, no libido, snappy, retaining weight (think that's it!)
My baby is one year old at the start of April and I thought all symptoms were down to being a new Mum and trying to juggle with going back to work!
Back in 8 weeks for more blood tests & antibody test.
Just need a little hand hold I think!
Thanks. x

Another good tip I got from my dentist, change your toothpaste to a flouride free paste. I get mine from the dentist but do use baby toothpaste if I run out.
The fluoride stops the absorption of thyroxine which of course I usually take in the morning at about the time I brush my teeth.
It's a small change but really does give you that extra 25% Ooomph in a day.

Still on75mg dam it.

And now I find that I have c-dis as well. But that's the point of low thyroid, very poor immunity so I guess this will happen until the meds are fully established

PositivePrana · 23/03/2012 09:54

Wow, good tip Zanz1bar! How long have you been on that dose? Have you had follow up bloods done?
Kickass you need to cut a break with your health, hopefully that is the last thing the Doc uncovers!
Off work today, thank goodness as head cold is zapping any additional energy the Lthyroxine may have given me! Off to the health food store to buy every cold remedy they have! Perhaps I'll have a snooze first! :)

Slowly upping the dose, been diagnosed for a year now.
My grandmother and mother are also hypothroid, and they say it isn't genetic!

I have a lot of other tips form my mum about what foods to avoid that are thyroxine inhibitors.

Brussel sprouts
Swede
Peanuts
Broccoli

And soya , something to watch out for as I now am in the steamy mists of the menopause and most alternative remedies and diets are full of soya products and they wipe me out.

kickassangel · 23/03/2012 11:08

I love sprouts and broccoli Sad

Spent the last 2 days lying around in the sun, and also been on the meds a week. My brain has definitely started to return so I am going back to work today.

Prana, I would guess that it will be a while before colds etc pass you by, but I am hoping to get there soon.

Oh, and I am the third member of my family with this. Not genetic my arse

Ok I have just got round to checking today's mail and have all my med info

I have T4 of 0.14 low

My TSH is 73.08

How much! The range quoted as normal is 0.3 to 5.5. How is it73? There must be some mistake?

I work with a med doc and may well be bugging her for info. she actually has no thyroid so knows quite a bit about levels etc

Kind of in shock. No wonder the practice nurse wanted to check about giving me the info

They sent me the results cos I asked for them. I have had loads of blood tests, every kind of mineral vitamin you can think of. I'm in the US so systems are different. I've got another set of blood tests booked and then a follow up appt for a few weeks.

When I was in the UK I was told that my thyroid was slightly low but not worth meds. That was when we were ttc. I can't help wondering now if I could have saved all that heart ache, and also had a second child, if this had been sorted out sooner.

I've been feeling ill for the last 10 years and I want to get Better Angry Sad

McKTastic · 24/03/2012 12:32

Hi KickA
I'm on the other (TTC) thread & was diagnosed just before Christmas. My original TSH levels were measured at over 150! I started on 25mcg of levothyroxine & have had it increased by 25mcg every month - TSH is now measuring just above 8 which is still not within range but it's definitely improving :) I had quite dramatic drops in TSH levels initially but was a bit :( last time it was checked as it was almost the same as the previous reading. I've not been referred to an endo but if my next readings seem to have stalled again am going to insist that I am - I want to be well & confident about trying for another baby not stuck in limbo!

Hope you get good advice.

kickassangel · 24/03/2012 13:39

Thanks mc. I've been started on 75 and already starting to feel better after just a week.

The idea of waking up in the morning and feeling healthy is almost alien to me. I am looking forward to it though Smile

Prana, I'm sure that feeling crap is feeling crap, however much the numbers read. Though once I get down to 8 I may have a different insight.

Now I have an eye infection and suspect I may have a chest infection too. I'm meant to be flying to the UK on Fri, not sure it will happen Sad

Thanks you guys!
kickass you need to get yourself on some echinacea and Vit C & Zinc. Although I am one to talk, I have a sinus infection & am on heavy duty antibiotics!
