Sooo I thought I'd get fitter and started the 30 day shred. Well it's shredded me alright but not in quite the way I was hoping.. instead of being fitter I rapidly developed severe pain in my sacroiliac joint, and 6 weeks later it's no better. I have had back problems on and off for years but this area and level of pain is something else.

I've been taking OTC painkillers but they aren't helping..will see the gp, but wondered if I am better off trying to rest my joints/back or whether to keep moving as much as I can. Currently it hurts to sit, walk, drive.....:(

As a veteran sufferer I would say you need to do the following:

  1. Take anti-inflammatories two to four times a day. I take Naproxen with Omeprazol to protect the stomach, but you could most likely take OTC ibuprofen 600mg four times a day for a week or so without any problems.
  2. Also take codeine phosphate 30mg four times a day (prescription only). An OTC alternative might be to take Solpadeine, which is 500mg paracetemol and 7.5 mg codeine, four times a day. Take this two hours after the anti-inflammatories.
  3. Have two warm baths a day, about 20 minutes in duration.
  4. Rest as much as you can, gentle walking only, very light swimming if you feel you need exercise. No carrying of bags or lifting, and no heavy handbags on one shoulder or arm.
  5. Wear Fit Flops or similar as much as you can.
  6. Some people do pilates but I found this a complete waste of time.
  7. Some people have chiropractic and I found it helped a bit.

You certainly need to see the GP and physio, and it is likely to take a good 6 weeks to settle if you have been hurting that long.

I had similiar pain on and. Off for years. Saw a few quacks and the GP could only offer painkilers.

Saw a physio who diagnosed Piriformis syndrome (spasm of the piriformis muscle). You can stretch it, but that tended to make my mine worse. 'unlocking' by the physio would cure it for a few days but then it would return.

Key in the end was a couple of private Pilates sessions, following On from Physio unlocking. I did the back moves religously for a couple of months and I've never been bothered since. I wouldn't reccommend classes since you have a specific problem to address.

I really, reaLly recommend you get to a physio ASAP.
