Does anyone have a child who is or was tongue tied? Did it require the snip or have they gotten along okay without treatment. I feel like such a bad mum. I didn't even notice it until it was pointed out to me tonight. And sure enough, the poor guy can't stick his tonge out past his lip.... awwwwww...

Just wondered if anyone else has any experience to share. My first reaction is that it's probably better to have it snipped before it effects his speech. Or is it likely that it won't effect his speech?

based on mcmudda's & other poster's experience, maybe i won't pursue tongue tie snip for dd any longer. the probs she's having brfeeding - taking 90 min or more per feed, bobbing on/off, etc - maybe problems even if she weren't tongue tied. Also, since it seems like such a fight to get the NHS maxilofacial doctor to so the snip, i can't be bothered to argue with him at a 3rd appointment. Maybe I'm too paranoid as a new mum(?)-how I feel anyway- and should wait to see if the tongue tie 'corrects itself' or should she have speech probs (which doc says she shouldn't). One thing for certain - if we should have another baby and he/she were tongue tied, I'd insist the snip upon birth, no question.

lua, did you see Mr Stewart in Nottm? My DD is with him and I would (and do) recommend him to anyone. On the babyfirnedly page he seems to be the only person in the whole of the Midlands who will do the snip.

Yes Sue. He was indeed fabulous. Really friendly!

My 4.3 dd had tongue tie and had a small operation to snip it under the nhs just before she was 2 years old, I had got a referral from my gp to a ENT consultant and he agreed to do it, she did have wait approx 4 months and it was over quickly, only one morning in hospital.
It can't have delayed her speech because a speech therapist has said she is 1 year ahead of herself for speech capabilities.
Then my ds was born with it too, I noticed it straight away and my midwife referred me to Chichester hospital where a consultant is snipping it at a few weeks old without any painkiller etc We went when he was 3 weeks old and it was done in minutes with hardly any crying!
So much better than dd's operation.
My dh also had it as a baby but then the gp would just snip it in their surgery!
If we have another child I would def choose to have it done early again.
Must go now shopping needed!

Hi new to mumsnet so apologies for butting in but dd also is tongue tied amazingly Dr in hospital pointed it out but again nothing would be done if feeding was fine. However 15 wks on dd although is breastfeeding and gaining weight suffers from severe trapped wind. When I listen to her feeding I can hear her gulpng air and her tongue often doesn't feel if it is in the right place. In fact she is having an episode right now. GP has referred her to hospital (appt Mon) as she actually screamed the surgery down before her jabs at 8 wks. They prob won't do anything about it as hv has already said that the tongue tie has nothing to do with her 'colic' so will go private (just in case hv is wrong).
