Long story short - have been peri menopausal for about 4 yeras and thought periods had stopped, but have had horrific bleeding and pain for the last few months. Doc put me on Northeristerone to stop the bleeding but the side effects were almost worse, so stopped it for a few days only to be back to bleeding, clots etc (TMI sorry!) Anyhow, she has suggested I use the coil..I've made an appointment to have one fitted but am a little Hmm about it all. Any one got any experience- good or bad??? TIA.

Similar experience here. I had mirena fitted (also using estradot patch) a couple of weeks ago. had read many horror stories of pain during and after online but tbh came to the conclusion it is only those women who have such bad experiences that tend to talk about them. Most others dont give it a second thought.

Anyway, my gp couldnt manage to fit mine - went to a clinic where they had a longer speculum (tmi?). Anaethetised the cervix (just a little prick, lol) and then they clamp the cervix (that was the WTF moment for me) and seconds later, all done. Just breeeeeaaaaathe. Or talk ten-to-the-dozen like a crazy woman. Worked for me :)

Thought I would be laid up in agony that evening, but not at all. No painful after effects at all. (I had taken paracetemol beforehand)
I am still bleeding slightly, but that's just a nuisance atm, and what I was expecting.

I was very nervous about having it fitted, but the nurse was lovely, there to hold my hand and reassure if needed.

Good luck!!

I had mine fitted and it hurt but I just bit my tongue and thought thats what happens, I walked out of the hospital and nearly passed out. I was really dizzy and faint I dont know how I got home in the next town over. Anyway I bled then and then it stopped for a just one day and then it started again. And then I just never stopped. The right hand side of my body was killing me and I could feel the threads so I went got them cut shorter (this was all in Scotland). Then moved here last year with periods being so heavy I couldnt walk and when i was not on period time i was still bleeding. It was the bad I ended up going to AnE and begged the doctors to take it out. He said it was too low down thats why it was causing pain and the doctor had scratched me allover the place inside. I have been offered it again but I am not too een as this happened above. But I hope this does not put you off. The best thing to do is if it is your only option of your prefered one then get it put in as it does stop and lighten periods. When it is in if it doesnt do what its supposed to over the six months time they give you see the doctor or if you react badly in the first day then go back to the doctor. Dont do what I did and try and BRAVE the pain!

I'm very happy with mine. Had it fitted 2 years ago and haven't had a period since. Very occasional, very light bleeding but that's it. No other side effects. Insertion was extremely painful but apparently I've got a very small, sensitive grumpy womb which spasms if you so much as look at it Hmm so I'm sure it was just me. In fairness, I had been told to take a couple of painkillers before insertion but decided to tough it out - stupid!

On the whole though it's been great - hope it works out well for you Smile

I had mine fitted a year ago and it's fine. When it was inserted it felt like a severe period pain, which eased off within a few mins. I had some light bleeding for about 48 hours but not enough that I was concerned about it.

I still get periods each month but they are incredibly light and nowhere near as painful as they used to be (I've always suffered very badly with heavy, painful periods).

Ultimately once it's in you can forget about it for 5 years, however if you don't like it you can take it out!

Tooblunt2012 · 16/03/2012 13:58

I had mine fitted in September & it's been great. I didn't experience any pain with the fitting just a bit of discomfort & then afterwards a little cramping. Nothing too bad & didn't last long at all.

Havent experienced any pain since & only get a little blood each month.

For me, it's been fab so hope you have that experience also.

I was really happy with mine, until it fell out!

I know my mum had it for menopause and swears it's the best thing! Is getting another to make sure she's out the other side and clear.. lol.

Try it!

I had mine fitted 5 weeks ago, it was quite painful being fitted but within a couple of hours I felt fine! I have however bled constantly since it was fitted, I think it should calm down soon though. Hmm

NCIS · 16/03/2012 15:08

I passed out when I had mine put in and then bled constantly for six months when I had it taken out.
I've now got the implanon implant and have very light spotting about once every three months. Brilliant!

ilovedjasondonovan · 16/03/2012 15:13

I've had mine over 3 years now. Had periods every month (normal ones) for the first 6 months, then nothing since. Also didn't feel like 'me' for about a year, but since then things have settled down and its fine.
And no periods is a bonus.
