Has anyone ever had vertigo?

I've been feeling very peculiar for the past week or so and have finally admitted that this isn't going to go away by itself.

Having looked at NHS Direct and scared myself witless, it looks as thouggh it could be vertigo. Has anyone had it? What did it feel like? How did you get over it and how long did it take?

TIA

yes, i am a long term sufferer, what is your vertigo like?
is it like spinning
light headedness
room swaying
feeling druk
or a sensation that the floor is moving?

spacecadet · 01/02/2006 17:01

feeling drunk that should say!

I am a martyr to labrynthitis flashingnose - have you had a heavy cold / ear infection / sinusitis recently?
The symptoms are similar to vertigo but is caused by a deep inner ear infection and needs masses of antibiotics to clear it - however it may not always go ( as in my case ) and will flare up at the drop of a hat - or indeed nose !

I had it about 2 years ago and I thought it felt like the ground wasn't quiye where it should have been. Also bumped off the walls a bit.

Feel better soon.

siobhan- i had labs 18 months ago and it never cleared, i was left with uncompensated labs, a cold is a nightmare to a vertigo sufferer!

Bloody awful isn't it ? I'm on cold number 6 since October and have just started the wobbly drunk caper - so off to the docs for more anti b's Feel like you just want to chop your head off !!!

yes its really miserable, ive had pneumonia and am now on a rteally heavy cold and feel like i might just fall over, not nice, the floor seems to have a life of its own too
i have received fab support though from this site
labyrinthitis help

Yes, its really unpleasant! felt like i was on a small ferry on a very rough sea. Had to lie down and stare at a fixed point to get any respite. lasted a couple of days, when i had an ear problem. the ear problem is ongoing(deafness and tinitus for about 5 years) but the vertigo hasnt come back (touch wood!)

hope you get it sorted out.x

Thanks for all your responses. Yes, it's just as you describe with the added excitement of being incredibly aware of my heartbeat (and my heart seems to "flutter" sometimes as well).

I've got a Dr's appointment this morning, so we'll see what he says.

I had something very like what you describe and tutned out to be an inner ear thing, dr gave me what were basicly travel sickness pills and they were great. Lots of hugs is not a good feeling, I hope you are not driving to the dr??

flashingnose, hope all went well at the docs, if they think its an inner ear prob and gave you anti-vertigo meds, dont take then for longer than a week otherwise your brain wont compensate for the problem.
if it persists, ask to be referred to a neurotoligist(a dizzy doc!) as opposed to an ent consultant, you may need to have some balance function tests.
its possible though that you have labyrinthitis which can take up to 8 weeks to completely clear.
