Bleeding between periods & abnormal smear

Worried about my friend, she has had a couple of abnormal smears and been referred on. The appt however is over a month away and she has now had increased bleeding between periods, she went back to Dr today to discuss this and he said he couldn't get her in any quicker.
Aren't these pretty bad red flags??

Abnormal smear result and inter-menstrual bleeding are not necessarily linked. Am I correct that your friend has been referred for colposcopy investigation because of her abnormal smear results?
The bleeding should be investigated separately e.g. for infection, a speculum exam to see if it's an inflammed ectropion and a gynaecology referral to assess the endometrium.

Thanks for the info bela, yes she has been referred to colposcopy clinic.

My post has some extra commas, so should read that the guidelines suggest investigation for:

  1. infection e.g. with HVS (high vaginal swab)
  2. speculum exam etc etc

So I hope she goes back to the GP and gets further management/investigation not just the pre-existing colposcopy.

Can be a red flag, but similarly could have benign cause. The few weeks are unlikely to make any difference, apart from obviously affecting anxiety levels for your friend.

As I've said your friend needs to seek separate investigation for these symptoms because a colposcopy is not an investigation that will definitely give an answer to her health issues.
Regardless of whether the colposcopy appt could be brought forward to help with her (understandable) anxiety it is necessarily the right to do.
