We are going on holiday at easter and she needs to have 2 innoculations. She has always had a blood/vein phobia from little. She's now at secondary school and its got worse. Can't touch her neck or wrist, has to leave biology lessons.

She is sick with worry about these innoculations. I have rung up a hypnotherapist, but she needs the jabs this week. Does anyone have any suggestions. She could'nt get to sleep last night worrying about it.

What are they? Does she really need them or is it more of a precautionary thing?

CatherinaJTV · 13/03/2012 20:18

Hi - what shots does she need?

igetcrazytoo · 13/03/2012 20:21

hi she needs her second mmR, she missed it when she was little as we were living overseas, and the other one is the polio dip one that they are going to be getting later this year at school. Nurse thinks these are worth having as we are going to caribbean (ist holiday in 3 years).

Emla cream, and cough when the needle goes in.

I would advise the GP practise about her problems and then just go and get them. Let her lie down (in case she faints, which is not rare at this age) and have two people at hand to hold her, so she doesn't twitch when the needles go in. Both my children had similar problem (DD "traumatised" from a very painful blood draw at age 4 - her 5 year shots were difficult - she "recovered" over a wart removal at age 7; my DS was in panic over dentist visits and needed treatment at a pediatric dentist - took a year and about 12 visits to get over that at age 8, but he did). She can do it, the reward will be sweet (and Biology is awesome, she should not feel she must leave class ever :) ). Sending hugs for her and you and strength and resolution.

Do you know what caused the phobia? Just curious, because lots of children genuinely seem to get them from nowhere and I often wonder what possibly triggers them.

igetcrazytoo · 14/03/2012 18:55

it started when she was about 3 and another child cut his foot, and she was the one that went deathly white. My DH was very concerned as he was like this as a child - and its just gone on from there.

poor thing - I hope you'll get this done and it will help show her that these needles are not too bad...
