Ow, ow, ow - I am teething at nearly 30!

My wisdom teeth only started coming through in my early to mid twenties. The two on the right side of my mouth have only been half-way out for years. I think that's as far as they're going to get. On my left side, I don't have a wisdom tooth on the bottom jaw, and the one on my top jaw has just a tiny bit poking through (it has been like this for a few months). This one is really, really hurting! My gum is a bit sore and swollen in that area, probably because a few days ago a tiny bit more tooth emerged which I mistakenly took to be a lodged piece of food and poked at it rather brutally with a kirby grip. It's really sore now; it aches when I swallow and it actually kept disturbing my sleep last night.

Is this a normal thing to happen when a wisdom tooth comes through? Or do I have to go to the dentist? I am trying to put off the dentist as I really can't afford it...

At least I am better able to sympathise with my 2 year old DS who is currently struggling with the emergence of his second molars. Now we can be grouchy and drooly together.

Unfortunately it's normal if the face of the tooth is about to some through, the gum splits open for it and it is painful. You can use some bonjella on it or swill your mouth the Corsadyl mouthwash to ease the pain and prevent infection. Hopefully it will come through quickly, if you notice any swelling to your jaw, cheek etc see the dentist, one of mine got infected when it was almost fully through and ended up needing it removed.

I'm waiting to have all my wisdom teeth out. They are going sideways, into my jaw/gum/other teeth, impacting them.

Thanks both - I gave in and went to the dentist today, and luckily she doesn't think it's infected but I have to go back next week, as I may need it out. Bother. Good luck with having them out Reenypip - poor you, if all four are aching like my single one is, it must be awful for you :(

My wisdom teeth came through in stages when I was in my mid stages. Through the skin and grow a wee bit then stop. Few months later grow a bit more. Always sore! Probably the first stage was the most painful. Good for weight loss as I could only face eating soup and yoghurt!
