Tinnitus......!

Aarrgghhh! It's driving me mad!

Started getting vertigo attacks last summer and for the last few months have had tinnitus too. Seems to be worse at the beginning of an attack of vertigo.

It's a high pitched kind of ringing and makes my head feel wobbly iykwim?

Is there anything that can be done for it? Is it associated with vertigo or just coincidental? I'm in bed at the moment so all is quiet and it's so irritating.

Any suggestions welcome

Ta :)

Hi there

I've suffered tinnitus for years but don't get vertigo. The only time I have is when I had labyrinthitis. Have you been to GP? Is it on one side or both sides?

My dad has menieres which is similar and he gets vertigo.

If you haven't been to GP then it's worth doing - I was referred to a hearing specialist as the buzzing was really annoying me - after seeing her once I hardly notice it anymore.

I've also heard it can be stress related so that might be worth addressing if it's a problem for you?

How are you now OP?

Hi usedtobe! It's still going I'm afraid Sad

It's both ears though left slightly worse. I work in quite a noisy office so don't notice it as much during the day, but when I get into bed it's very noticeable.

I have been to the Gp about the vertigo and mentioned the ringing in my ears but she didn't take much notice, just said it can happen sometimes.

Your poor dad - menieres must be awful, does he have hearing loss with it? I thought that might be what I had, but have no hearing loss so kind if pushed that though away.

If it doesn't improve soon I'll go back and ask for an audiology referral, I was told years ago that I had a small degree of hearing loss at certain pitches due to excessively loud Walkman I used to listen to. Not sure if that's relevant here though.

Thanks for checking in on me Smile

The other thing I was told was that sometimes neck tension can cause tinnitus - so maybe a massage might help? After suffering for about a year, I went for a sports massage and it definitely improved it a lot, though it has never gone away completely.

If the vertigo is bothering you then definitely go back to the GP as there is medication you can take to help.

Hope you get it sorted Smile

Sorry forgot to answer your question about my dad - yes he has some hearing loss in one side. He had it quite bad to start with - really bad attacks where he was stumbling around and vomiting - he has it under control now though.

I'm sure it's not that though.

I have permanent loud tinnitus and episodic vertigo so you have my sympathy. I see an ENT but they're useless as they thought it might be Meniere's disease but they say it's not because I have the symptoms in the wrong order. It's exhausting.

I have a couple of apps on my phone that I use for white noise when I am trying to fall asleep but sometimes I just want peace.

Do either of you get cold sores? Apparently there is a link to the cold sore virus - I think it attacks the hairs in the inner ear.

Grockle · 16/03/2012 17:16

No cold sores here. I didn't know about that link.

By no means an expert on this but vividly remember going for Acupuncture for neck tension years ago and whilst in the waiting room, a woman came up to the counter to pay, in tears. When asked if she was alright she replied "Yes, I've had Tinnitus for 15 yrs...and it's gone!" Worth a try?

I get it, mines caused by the eustachian tube in my ears becoming blocked, it can also cause dizziness etc so might be worth asking the GP about it. Last time I was given ear drops which didn't work and then was given a steroid nasal spray which cleared it up in about a month. It's back again but I haven't been to the doctor about it yet.

UsedToBePretty · 16/03/2012 18:28

Rikalaly - how did they diagnose that? I'm pretty sure mine is that too because for a while my ear felt really blocked but I've never been given a diagnosis. I had an MRI scan and they just said there was nothing of significance or something.
