Do I have an ingrown toenail?

My big toenail on the right foot is very red and sore. The area around it is warm.
I will try to upload a photo onto my profile ( not promising!)

I CANNOT believe the Sporners haven't found this thread and inundated you with offers to squeeze / prick / amputate.

Mumsnet just isn't what it was ...

candytuft63 · 13/03/2012 18:52

Good luck, prawn Smile

Ha! I seem to be following my colleage Fluffycloudland around mumsnet! waves at fellow Pod. Accidentprawn I have had a look at your pic and yes, it is an ingrown toenail. To be honest, whether or not it is has a spicule (spiky bit) is irrelevant - sometimes funny shaped nails just do this anyway (especially if you've worn tighter shoes that might push the nail into the skin).

Get thee to a podiatrist. They might be able to trim it back but it does look rather ouchy so you might be up for nail surgery (which is not really that big a deal, honest :o and you get a nice big sympathy-inducing bandage afterwards) . This can be done on the NHS, but as Fluffycloudland says, the waiting list will be much much shorter if it is done privately.

They do seem to, Hairdressers too.

Everyone thinks it's a sit down job but obviously not. Ooh flat lace ups with a round toe for you from now on!

VegemiteSandwich · 14/03/2012 21:55

not a FHP?!?! I didn't think they were allowed!!

Fluffycloudland77 · 14/03/2012 22:02

Yep. I have been waiting for another pod to come on here.

There's a really nice orthopod surgoen who does foot ops too.

Sidge · 14/03/2012 22:07

You have an infected toe with overgranulation as a result of inflammation, probably from an ingrowing toenail.

I second (third?) seeing a private podiatrist once the infection has resolved, as you unfortunately will be low priority for NHS nail surgery and may have to wait many months to be seen.

A wedge resection (removal of the offending ingrowing part of the nail) should sort you out!

HansieMom · 15/03/2012 00:31

Soak it in hot water with Epsom salts. It will feel much better.

I had this a couple weeks ago, worst ever. I knew I should get spicule out, and did. It is fine now but might not be when it regrows. If it ever is as bad, I want surgery on it. Do they do nail resection when it is infected? Sounds dangerous!

accidentprawn · 15/03/2012 15:49

I have found a podiatrist! I have an appointment with him tommorow.
He says the best thing to do will be to remove part of the nail.

I have had 2 ingrown toenails (one for about 6 years and the other from 2011 until now) you may consider the op or as I've been hearing on here, putting a little roll of tissue under each side of the nail to lift it out of the skin so it is not causing any pain. I have started doing this and it feels better than it did after I had the op on the other one, wish I'd done it before.
Hope it heals soon, best of luck Grinx
