Pneumococcal meningitis vaccine - where can I get it?

Having read about the vaccine in the Times yesterday I've been trying to find out whether any clinics exist near me. Googled but am finding it difficult to find info on private jabs.
Can anyone help?

Have you asked your GP or health visitor for advice on where to get it? they may even be able to get it for you.

LIZS · 31/01/2006 14:50

Do you mean Prevenar ? GP may be able to give it to you or suggest a private local clinic.

pooka · 31/01/2006 15:06

Yes it was prevenar. Thanks for the advice - will mention it to Go when I see her next week.

I used yell.com to find a private clinic, which I originally contacted to get hold of flu vaccines. They were able to source Prevenar for me.

your Gp should be able to order it in for you, it depends on the age of your child ,what they need and how much. my Gp ordered my Dds on a private presciption, it was about £55 per dose.

£55 !!!! good grief

pooka · 31/01/2006 20:50

It is steep isn't it? Makes me so that it isn't part of the routine imms and so only those who can afford it can go down this route. Still thinking about it.

Makes me sad too Pooka as my Dd1 died from this disease in April 2005 aged 19 months.
If the vaccine had been introduced then my baby girl would still be here.

Oh Amyjade
I'm so sorry.

High risk groups should be vaccinated with it for free. Low risk should only have to pay the cost of the medicine. I think it was £25 or so. I had my children done because it is mandatory for school entry in california, but also because pneumeccocal (sp?) is one of the main strains of meningitis and can be deadly. (Amyjade, so sorry to hear of your loss, my heart goes out to you)

My son has been vaccinated for free as he is in a high risk category (especially as he can't have the flu vaccine due to egg allergies). If he hadn't have been entitled, I would certainly have considered going privately, especially as I already pay to have single MMR jabs as well.

Pooka, I agree with checking yell.com or similar for private clinics. You can then call them and see what jabs they provide.
