Sinusitis caused by allergic rhinitis

Doc says my persistent sinusitis is caused by chronic allergic rhinitis and has given me Beconase nasal spray and anti-histamines. He says it may take months to sort out and the allergy is most likely house dust. Any one else had this? Any tips? How long did it take to clear up? How did you find out what the allergy was? Fed up of my face hurting all the time.

Ds has house dust mite allergy (among other things) and has had dreadful problems with sinusitis.

The approach we have is to reduce the dust mites as much as possible - deep vacuuming, damp dusting, washing bedclothes at 60 degs, airing the bedroom (although he also has pollen allergy, so not always best idea!), using an air purifier and humidifier in his room.

His allergy consultant prescribed a steroid spray to use every evening - Nasonex, which made a huge difference. The ENT consultant also suggested using a nasal wash spray - we use Nasamist which comes in a can. You can also use a netti pot which may work out cheaper. Amazon has good deals though. Ds uses this morning and evening.

Following this regime has made a huge difference so far this year and he has missed very little school compared to the weeks he missed last academic year.

I think reducing the house dust mites in the house is just as (if not more) important as all the treatments though. If there are mites present, you will just keep reacting to them.

Good luck.

Thanks - The doctor did say it was most likely dust mites. I have invested in new pillows but I think I will have to give the bedroom a really good deep clean then. I've never heard of a netti pot before so I have just googled- do you just use salt water?

I think it was all triggered by chlorine in the swimming pool - I used to swim 2 or 3 times a week until around a year ago and as soon as I left the pool I would start sneezing and the next day I would feel terrible.

Your poor DS, how old is he? Does he have any other allergies?

With the netti pots, I think you can buy sachets that you mix with water - presumably makes a sterile saline solution. I'm sure there will be threads on hear about using them.

Ds is 10, has a few allergies, house dust mite, grass pollen, cats, dogs, horses, peanut and hazelnut. He outgrew egg allergy a few years ago.

Yes, deep clean your room regularly. Get rid of all unnecessary fabric - carpets, curtains. If you do have carpet, when hoovering, go over the same spot 10-15 times. The worst places for dust mites to be are where you stand for dressing. Dead skin will fall off you and your clothes and this is what the mites feed on. Yuk! The experts also recommend moving your furniture to different spots regularly to stop these 'hot spots' from forming.

We have not put down a wooden floor in ds' room yet but I can tell when his room needs a thorough clean by his sneezing and coughing.

I sure if yo repost in the allergy section, others will have more suggestions.

Yes the deep cleaning is helpful but it's like hay fever or cat allergies its better to treat yr immune system by discovering which food group is causing the problems in the first place. I cleared all my allergies after going on the Blood Type Diet by Dr Peter D'Adamo. I'm an A type and am not good with most dairy and deadly nightshade vegetables. It is worth checking out.

Thank you, I have orderered a netti pot and given the bedroom a good going over today. Yuk Yuk Yuk!

Will have a google for the blood type diet too.
