Teething - can it cause a temperature or not!

I am on baby no 3 and you would think I would know what I am doing by now!!

DS2 is def teething. Has all the classic signs - runny and sore bum, dribbling, one bright red cheek, miserable, off food, off milk. Generally driving me nuts!! But last night he had a high temperature. Now i thought that teething could do this but a friend of mine assures me it can't. So is he ill or not!!?

As a dentist I was taight at university that there is no medical evidence to suggest it is linked to teething (but as a mother i'm preety undecided about it as it happens all to often to be a coincidence.)

taught even .

LIZS · 31/01/2006 11:22

I'd say not. The other signs possibly but not the temperature.

Levanna · 31/01/2006 11:24

DD1 definitely didn't get temps with teething, DD2 definitely does, I'm certain!

Avalon · 31/01/2006 11:25

I know there's no evidence, but mine all had temperatures.

My hv told me they couldn't have a runny bum either (but they did!)

MerlinsBeard · 31/01/2006 11:26

hot and bothered maybe but unsure of temperature. if it stays high for a while maybe take to the dr?

I may change my mind when ds2 finally decides he wants to have some teeth(hes 10 months and still no sign!!!)

PrettyCandles · 31/01/2006 11:27

When babies teeth they are more prone to all sorts of infections as they are more likely to put things into their mouths. That's my theory anyway! I wouldn't treat a fever during teething any differently to a fever at any other time - Calpol/Nurofen, cooling, plenty of fluids and cuddles. And if it doesn't improve, then to the GP.

Levanna · 31/01/2006 11:30

Oh, no. Better make clear that DD2 has never had a raging or prolonged temperature when teething! Her temperature has been higher than normal but not by a great deal.

Ill then! Fab. I HATE THE WINTER!!
