Im seriously thinking of going for one but I thought I read on here somewhere that it can be dangerous? Anyone had one and what are the dangers?

yes i think it can cause bowel damage... if they fill you up too much etc etc

chapsmum · 29/01/2006 22:03

jampts really, don't. Theres a reason its not common pracise anymore....
Why were you thinking of having one done???

jampots · 29/01/2006 22:45

because I feel sluggish in my bowel, and since starting my diet and losing 9lbs so far this year I go days without "eliminating". Also in a bid to lose a bit more weight if Im completely honest.

What about those detox phials in Boots then - are they any good?

Aloe Vera juice and prunes for breakfast.
Beetroot is the detox queen btw.

Gingerbear · 29/01/2006 22:47

I mean the mumsnetter, not the vegetable, obv.

jampots · 29/01/2006 22:58

I will harrass her now

the colon, like the vagina, is a self-cleansing organ. colonic irrigation can upset its balance and also there's a risk of perfforation.

don't do it!

it's entirely unnecessary.

Gingerbear · 29/01/2006 23:00

well done on losing 9lb btw. Are you drinking at least 1.5 litres of water a day? That always 'hurries things along' for me.
Coffee enemas work too, so I have heard.

jampots · 29/01/2006 23:02

i cant take caffeine and even the garnier rollaball anti cellulite thing gave me palpitations the other week

Jampots, maybe your diet is a bit too limited if you are going for days without going, as it were. Are you drinking enough (liquids, not alcohol!)? Do you eat enough fibre? Fruit and veg? Any chance you might be eating too many bananas (they can slow things down)?

jampots · 29/01/2006 23:06

yes i drink loads of water not alcohol or pop/squash. I also drink green tea

OP posts:
edam · 29/01/2006 23:09

Try orange juice (ie fruit juice, not squash), it does help to move things along.

Wouldn't it be a bit like, you know, anal sex. Does this do harm as well?

woowoo · 31/01/2006 14:30

I'm not sure about the a**l thing, maybe someone else could shed light on this subject. I think the colonic might be more invasive, but not sure as I have not had it done. A friend has and she really enjoyed it, but she apparently also enjoys a bit of bottom action, if you know what I mean!

Bugsy2 · 31/01/2006 14:35

I read an article recently (very sorry can't remember exactly where but a women's mag) and it quoted a few experts (nutritionists etc) saying that colonic irrigation is not necessary and actually removes all the good gut flora at the same time as everything else.

chapsmum · 31/01/2006 14:36

woowoo, the stick a tube up you bum roughtly the size of a hose pipe and then wash you bowels out with copeous amouts of fluid. If done to regularly, like laxative abuse , can also cause vitamin deficiencys. B12 and folate are absobed from the iilium and you don't want to be messing with that.

woowoo · 31/01/2006 14:53

Chapsmum, it's not me who is thinking of having it. I was just letting Assumpta know that a friend of mine enjoyed it, but it is Jampots who has the original query. I really don't think it would be a very comfortable experience. Then again, wasn't princess diana a big user of colonic.
