Smear results

Had them bk today and the cells are abnormal, I had seen the doctor about having one done due to having pain when having sex and terrible discharge, also my periods were heavy and lumpy everytime I have one, so she had examined me and said that she was sending me for a coloposcopy but wasn't concerned about cancer so I would not be seen for three month, then when she did the smear I felt raw inside as she did it ( painfull)
Which I'd never experienced before, do I ask for it to be brought forward as due to my smear results being abnormal?

It depends how abnormal they are, does your letter say? I think they usually repeat the smear in three months if only mildly abnormal, I think if moderate or severe they send you for colposcopy.

I does not say in the letter

Are you in England?
Who has the result letter come from - is it your GP or is it from the screening agency (it would then say 'on behalf of your GP')?
Does the result letter say you are supposed to come back for a repeat smear or that you are being referred for investigation?
There are different managements depending on the grade of abnormality. It ranges from a 6 month repeat to colposcopy referral.
The dilemma you have now is why usually having a smear done at your GP and being referred for colposcopy is not usually advised (if anyone asks the lab).
Did the GP also take swabs, as the some of the symptoms you have may be caused by inflammation or infection.

I suggest going back to the GP to discuss the results and find out what will happen re your existing referral.

It had said that there were abnormal changes and that they will send me out another appointment in six months, I'm not in England, but up north,
I don't think it was my gp who sent the letter,,

Hi
Most areas in England (and I think it includes Scotland) send invitation and result letters to women on behalf of their GP from a central agency for each area.
With that result letter it will usually mean the changes are either borderline changes or mild dyskaryosis. These are called minor or low grade abnormalities and often resolve on their own without needing treatment. Scotland isn't bringing in HPV testing yet, England is implementing it from April this year.
What smear results mean
I saw from other threads that you've posted before about your symptoms (hope you don't mind, I thought we'd 'spoken' before) and that the GP thought you had an ectropion and that might be causing the bleeding.
The smear results may not be anything to do with your symptoms, so you still should go for investigation of your symptoms.
Post-coital bleeding is often due to a large and/or inflammed ectropion. Colposcopy is really useful as the staff can have a good look at your cervix and can apply cautery which can stop the bleeding, or give other treatment if they think there is an infection.
Has the GP done a gynaecology referral for the problems you're having with your periods?

It is probably worth having a chat with your GP and ask them to go through it with you and see if what they think about your existing referral.

Hi, thanks for your comment, Smile
That really helps thanks... I did have an erosion as she said and that's why she was sending me for the coloposcopy as I had pain with deep penetration and bleeding between periods.. But didn't feel the need for it to be done straight away. With the tests coming bk as abnormal I was worried,, not anymore thanks... I'll make an appointment with my gp as the discharge is getting worse and my periods are heavy and lumpy... She has not said anything about seeing a gynaecologist I'll mention it to her and see what she says.. Thanks for putting my mind at rest Smile
