I remember there being a medication that clashes with grapefruit, but I can't remember which one it is...?

It was a kind of hayfever tablet, cant remember the name, but they stopped selling it a good few years ago so you should be safe. The combination of the two caused some kind of heart problem

HettyKett · 28/02/2012 15:49

Google says there are plenty

Blu · 28/02/2012 15:54

It was terfernadine (sp) in Triludan hayfever tabs. No longer supplied.

TheLightPassenger · 28/02/2012 15:57

also statins.

exexpat · 28/02/2012 16:00

And some antibiotics, like erythromycin.

exexpat · 28/02/2012 16:01

And I think it was particularly grapefruit juice rather than just grapefruit itself - I guess because it's more concentrated.

lisad123 · 28/02/2012 16:01

Dh isn't allowed it with his chemo

PastGrace · 28/02/2012 16:06

Statins + grapefruit can be v dangerous (but not sure if it's all statins - best to avoid just to be safe).

ohyouBadBadkitten · 28/02/2012 16:10

also

nifedepine
verapamil
amiodarone.

Many medications interact with grapefruit and grapefruit juice. This is because some constituents of grapefruit suppress an enzyme in the liver which is used in the metabolism of drugs. This results in higher levels of the drug circulating in the bloodstream. You really should check that any medication you take is compatible with grapefruit.

ohyouBadBadkitten · 28/02/2012 16:13

interesting - patient leaflet for diltiazem said nothing about grapefruit but the link hetty posted did.

Methe · 28/02/2012 16:13

warfarin
sertraline

grapefruit can cause you to overdose on all kinds of drugs, it affects the first pass in the liver (so that's most drugs)

so say you take something that's metabolised in the liver, then 4 hours later (as per perscription) you take it again when it SHOULD be safe to, because the grapefruit has affected the drug breakdown you are now taking a higher dose as there is still some left from the last dose (which would normally be more metabolised by then), so there's a potential to overdose.

So I never take grapefruit with any meds

TheLightPassenger · 28/02/2012 16:20

Shock I accidentally ate some grapefruit in a restaurant salad a few years back, checked with pharmacist at Boots who said that I shouldn't be too concerned as it made the statin less effective. Which was completely the wrong advice.

clucky80 · 29/02/2012 16:00

I take tacrolimus (an immunosuppressant) and I am not allowed any form of grapefruit as it affects my blood levels of the drug. I can't stand grapefruit so not too much of an issue!
