Oral thrush treatment

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could give me a bit of advice on treatment for oral thrush?

In fact I have two questions.

I went to the GP last Wednesday with a sore tongue, which felt like it was burnt all over even though it wasn't, and white 'furry' looking patches on my tongue. The GP gave me some treatment for oral thrush (Nystan suspension drops). I've been using them since Wednesday and have nearly finished the course of treatment. My tongue feels a lot better in terms of not feeling burnt any more, but there are still several white patches on it (although these are clearing up).

So, firstly, do I need to have got rid of all those white patches to get rid of it properly? Will it reoccur if I just stop at the end of this course of treatment without getting rid of all the tongue furriness? Should I go back to the GP and ask them for more drops? I have to say the GP didn't really inspire me with confidence - she looked vaguely horrified as if I had gone in with a case of something completely awful - surely oral thrush isn't that bad?

Secondly, I'm 36 weeks pregnant. Can I pass oral thrush to the baby? I've heard various horror stories of babies getting thrush (although I thought it was easier for them to get vaginal thrush) and then that becoming oral thrush in them (?) and then it passing back and forth during breastfeeding - ouch!!

I may as well throw in a third question for good measure while I'm posting:

Is there anything else I could do to help with it?

Thank you for your help :)

Hey, just from my dd1's oral thrush experience, Nystatin was rubbish, and it never cleared. I eventually got prescribed daktarin oral gel (tastes of chocolate orange lol), and it was 100 times better. I ran out at one point, but ended up buying it over the counter, although I don't know if u can use it whilst pg, but if you can use Nystatin, I'd have tought Daktarin was ok. Go back 2 ur gp though, and question it, and ask about Daktarin oral gel x

Thanks Longdistance

I went back to the GP this morning, and he gave me some more Nystan drops so we'll see if that clears it up? Although maybe I'm not so hopeful!

More importantly though he assured me that I couldn't pass it on to the baby (which was my main concern at the mo) so I can just stick it out with these drops and maybe fight it a bit more forcefully once I'm not pg anymore!
