Take painkillers and hope the pain stops soon. If not, you will have to force yourself to go and let them know you are very nervous.

I too hate dentists and tend to avoid them as best as possible. I always refuse needles so they would have to put me to sleep to do anything! Good luck.

I had a wisdom tooth out a few yrs ago because of an abscess undeneath it...bloody painfuL,but getting the tooth pulled was painless. The injection stings for a milli second, then all you feel is a pulling sensation.Go,explain your phobia and ask them to tell you everything they're doing,it'll be so much easier than you think.

It is worth it,please go

I hate going to the dentist too so I can well sympathise but it is not going to get better on its own. Sometimes with pain in wisdom teeth, it's actually caused by infection in the gum as they can be so difficult to clean if they don't come through properly. I had one removed several years ago but this was only after several episodes of agony. If there is an infection you will be prescribed antibiotics after which the pain should disappear. If this happens more than once, most dentists would probably recommend the tooth comes out.

These days there are many dentists who advertise that they cater for nervous patients and many do sedation. If you don't have dentist ask around for recommendations.

I really do feel for you but I think you are going to have to go to the dentist in the end. You will be glad afterwards!

like the kid says, regular pain killers. Soluble co-codamol swished round your mouth then swollowed. Oil of cloves has a natural pain killing property when applied directly to site of apin. stinks though.

Marne · 28/01/2006 16:37

Not sure what pain killers i can take as i am 32 weeks pg, was hoping it would just go away but seems to be getting worse.

co-codamol is fine when you are preg, I took it for toothache at exactly the same stage.
Best to see if you need antibiotics thoug as a circulating infection, is not a good thing during prg, does not need jags for thin#s, just a wee look

The longer you leave it, the worse it will get - you have to go and get it sorted out. The dentist probably won't do anything with your tooth on your first visit anyway - he may need to give you antibiotics to clear any infection first - and you can use the first visit to tell him how scared you are, and to ask if he can give you sedation or if he would be able to refer you to a dental hospital so that you could have the tooth taken out under a general anaesthetic.

I sympathise - I'm terrified of dentists (mine is terrified of me too, because he's never had to deal with someone so nervous), but you really have to go before it gets any worse.

How about having one session of hypnotherapy? I'm a hypnotherapist and I recently treated a client (a teenage girl) who hadn't been for years. She couldn't even go for a checkup. I had one session with her and she called a week later to tell me she had been, and had her check up, and everything was fine.

katymac · 28/01/2006 18:31

I had 5 (very expensive) sessions of hypnotherapy

And just over a week ago I had 2 root fillings done with only 2 valium

Which is a massive improvement

Katymac. What would it have taken before the hypnotherapy?

Lonelymum · 28/01/2006 20:01

Marne, if you haven't been to the detist for five years, you might not know that it seems to be standard procedure these days to ask on the form you fill out as a new patient if you are scared of dentists and dental treatment. That alone suggests that dentists are now much better at dealing with nervous patients such as yourself. And WWB is right, they won't do anything in your first visit anyway - maybe just an xray - so itsn't it worth just trying to go along to find out if your worst fears are confirmed? You wouldn't have to go back for treatment if you didn't want to, but at least you would know the score.

mumatuks · 28/01/2006 20:07

Marne,

This happened to me just a few months back.

I had a whopping great hole in my tooth, so bad I can't describe it. I haven't been to a dentist for 8 years I'm so scared!

The pain got so unbearabvle i nearly overdosed on paracetamol and it turned out I had an infection underneath my tooth.

Please don't leave it any longer. I went to the dentist who realised how scared I was and referred me to a dentist who could do extraction under sedation. I was so relieved. It is expensive, I was very fortunate that DH could pay for me, but IMO it was worth every penny.

You must go, I know how you feel, but please don't get like I did.

BTW I was fine under sedation, was meant to be awake but dreamy, I fell fast asleep instead!!

katymac · 28/01/2006 21:18

Marmeladesun - it usually took a general anesthetic for even a routine filling and even a check up had me shaking and crying
