Causes of fainting?

My mum is one of those absurdly active pensioners. Wouldn't dream of taking the car when she can cycle or walk, can keep up with four grandchildren at the same time plays loads of sport, seems to effortlessly keep an immaculate house....and she never ever gets ill. In her 40+ years as a teacher she never had a single day off sick. It's not that she's tougher than the rest of us, she doesn't get sick, never a cough, cold or stomach upset.

Anyway today she collapsed (while paying sport!). Apparently she came round quite quickly, was helped to her feet then collapsed again. Her friends phoned for an ambulance but were advised just to take her to GP, which they did. GP has said it was just a faint and she's fine, but do people really faint for no reason?

If Gp said she is ok then maybe she just hadnt eaten much and over did it?

Thank's Soccermom2, you could be right actually, the first thing DH said when he heard was "she doesn't eat enough to keep a flea alive" but she's always been like that and enjoyed perfect health

I faint immediately after sports accidents/injuries (falling off horses etc); it's the shock, could she have had an injury beforehand?

I've fainted because of anaemia/ shock / sight of blood / eating too many sweets very quickly !

has anyone done an ecg on your Mum? that is one thing i'd be asking for.

I would also have said low blood pressure. I suffer from this. I saw a cardiologist & he suggested eating more salt & having a strong coffee in the morning!
If it happens again, she should definitely ask for further investigation. I had a 24 hour monitor & it confirmed that as well as low blood pressure I had a low resting heart rate. I found it very reassuring to know it wasn't anything more serious.

mum did this twice and the first one,she was in a dead faint, and a nurse came running over and couldnt feel her pulse and thought she was dead,as her eyes were wide open, she went to hospital and had all sorts of tests, and all was clear, they said it could be the start of something,or just a one off,she has had one more since which was a year later.we put it down to low blood sugar.hope your mum is better.

Best way to stop this kind of fainting is to drink plenty of water.
Low blood pressure and dehydration = fainting every time.
How much had she had to drink that day?
