Does anyone use tablets to reduce heavy periods?

I have an appointment on Wednesday to see my GP as i want to ask him about them, does anyone here use them?

I have two days where i am really really heavy, hourly change and sometimes i still flood. I am due to go back to work soon so i am thinking ahead. Do they work/cause any side effects?

Thanks.

Yes-I use Mefenamic Acid. They are for pain and flow, and they work for me. There are others though. Smile Good luck. Oh, and no side effects to report.

Yes. My periods were so heavy they were making me anemic. I tried Mefenamic acid first, but it didn't make a huge difference with me. It was very good for period pain though, as it is a pain killer too.

I am now on Tranexamic Acid. It has been fantastic and has reduced bleeding by about 50% during the heavy days. I wish I'd known it years ago. No side effects at all. Good Luck!

Oh should add, these kind of tablets work better over time. The first month you may not see a huge difference but by about the third month they are really effective.

Oh thats great! I luckily don't have any pain, just a heavy flow. I get very emotional a couple of days before i am due on now too which i have never experienced before....oh the joys of getting older!!!

I am right in thinking you take the tablets only on your heavy days? How does it work? Does your body just re-absorb all the extra?

Thnaks for your replies!

I was on mefanamic acid to begin with too, and they worked really well for a couple of years. Just lately my periods have got worse (hourly change, all through the night too, for 2-3 days) so they've put me on tranexamic acid and it's marvellous!

Instead of my period lasting 5 days it lasts for 7 now, so it slows it down but makes it longer. That I can deal with!

Growlithe · 27/02/2012 18:26

I'm on both mefanamic acid and tranexamic acid. They are brilliant. I had a lot of leaks before and now I just take them for the first two days of my period and now its much better.

QuickLookBusy · 27/02/2012 20:25

ido Yes, I just take them when the heavier bleeding starts and I was told to only take for up to 4 days, but I only need them for 3 days.

They work by stopping the blood vessels in your womb from opening up as much, so less blood is able to come out. I'm not sure about the reasbsorption bit Confused

What cured mine was a Mirena coil.

argghh · 03/03/2012 12:29

Be careful, I did nothing about my very heavy periods and am now seriously anaemic. I am now going to take traneximic acid and may have Mirena fitted. Dr also thinking about delaying next period with another tablet too.

Def wirth trying traneximic and maybe ask for blood test too ?

I used both the tablets above mentioned and tbh, they didnt really do much for me,i was also given another, cant remember the name, they were a bit better, but i had to have iron tablets aswell,i had 2 mirena coils, which both fell out,due to very heavy flow.By now totally fed up,i opted for an internal scan and biopsy, andsaw the lining of my womb, looked like the moon, anyway i went for a laser treatment,to laser off the lining of my womb, this is for women who dont want any more children, and an overnight stay in hospital and coming up to a year this may,all i can say is brilliant,i have a one day period, and only need a liner, cant believe it,i was in the babys nappys for bed,i was soooo heavy.good luck,it took me about 4 years to get here,so dont delay or let them fob you off.

lilmamma · 03/03/2012 21:50

ment to add,the tablets make the lining a lot thicker,as you are not letting so much blood out,so when i came off the tablets before my op,i couldnt believe the amount of blood and clots to come away, sorry to be so graphic,i spent one day nearly all day on the toilet, but by the time my op came my womb was nice and thin for him to remove it as deep as he could.

I was going to go on the coil but trying to get three doctors appointments in a row at a convenient time was just impossible. So I went back on the pill which works for me (and cleared up the dreaded acne).
