Help! DD can't see properly out of one eye - what could this be?

She is 13. She says she has blurred vision in one eye only. Earlier on it was flashing but now it's just blurred. I've had a look at her but her eye looks perfectly okay.

Does anyone know what this could be and whether there is anything I should do?

TIA

Sounds exactly like what happens to me before I get a migraine.... is she prone to headaches at all?

Miaou · 28/01/2006 11:56

Those of you with migraines, do you get blurred vision in one eye?

I wondered about that, didn't realise it could start in one eye.

She says she doesn't have a headache but I might give her some painkillers now just in case.

What would be best, I have paracetamol or ibuprofen?

The reason why I asked anorak is that dh had blurred vision in just one eye, and it turned out he had shingles in his eye. At the eye hospital (we were sent there on a Sunday to be investigated!) they seemed to think it was very unusual, but perhaps that's because dh has no history of migraines.

IIWY I would go to the gp's/opticians just to be on the safe side.

PS dh had a very local headache for 24 hours before his vision went blurred (not a migraine though) and it was the combination of factors that meant he ended up being investigated straight away - don't want you to worry unnecessarily!!

I very occasionally get Migraines and they start in one eye. The first time I had anything was just what your DD had. The vision kind of disorted all to one side into a flickering shape. It didn't progress into a headache but after that I had a couple of full blown migraines which always had the blurred vision in one eye at the beginning.

migraine- i get this tunnel vision if im abot to get a migraine.

I think I will give her paracetamol and tell her to lie down quitely in her bedroom with the curtains closed for a while. If that doesn't get rid of it I will phone NHS direct.

Thank you everyone, I did think of migraine but never knew it could start in one eye only, so your posts have been very helpful.

Well she took the paracetamol and had a lie down. She says that after a few minutes she got a tremendous headache "like a brass band playing in my head" and then very soon it went away and now she feels okay.

So you were all absolutely right by the sound of it! Seemingly she had the paracetamol just in time.

I started getting migraines at 13, just when the hormones were really gearing up....and now have them again mid-forties when they're gearing down again..
It does sound like a typical migraine, I get one eyed blurred vision/tunnel vision followed by crashing headache. Worth running past a GP at some point, if only to get a prescription for vasodilators which can be a godsend if they become regular or nasty.
