DS2 whacked head a week ago - still got a hard lump sticking out

Am wondering what on earth it is! He hit his head on Rapids water slide at Center Parcs, and had an enormous egg on right temple. Put ice on it and made him sit out of short tennis as a bit dizzy, but other than that he's been fine. The huge lump went down ok, but a week on, he's still got a hard small bump sticking out of the yellow bruising. Anyone medical out there - is it likely to just be residual swelling? (Though it's hard.)

It is actually in pretty much the same area he had a ruptured aneurysm this time last year, but I don't think it's anything to do with that, as would have symptoms? Am loathe to have yet another hospital visit, as he seems ok in himself. Any thoughts?

bumping in case anyone medical has joined in.

You are joking aren't you?

LadySybilDeChocolate · 25/02/2012 20:55

Take him to A&E and get him checked by a medical professional.

4madboys · 25/02/2012 20:57

actually you do sometimes get this with bruising, there is a name for it but i forget what its called, my ds4 had one on the side of his face by his eye socket where he also had a massive bruise and ds3 has had one. i would get it checked out tbh just to be safe, esp given his medical history. but it is something to do with the bruising and there is some form of harder tissue that can often form and it fades away with time, i only know as my mum is a nurse and she explained it, but i cant remember what it is called Blush

kazkiss · 25/02/2012 20:58

This makes me laugh! Your child had a ruptured aneurysm . Hit is head hard enough to get a lump the same area . Has had no medical treatment and op doesn't know whether see can be bothered to go to the hospital to get it checked out? I am confused genuinely ?

HOSPITAL

minxthemanx · 25/02/2012 21:01

No, not joking. He's been absolutely fine in himself, and they assured me at Gt Ormond St that the aneurysm was completely sealed (had angiogram a few weeks ago), and that the coils can;t be dislodged by banging his head. Told to carry on with all his sports, head the football etc. He's been fine at school in PE, Dance, and football this week. So I really don't think the bump is anything to do with it - just odd that the hard little bump is still there after a week. Maybe I'll take him to A &E tomorrow, though the poor kid has spent half the last year in and out of hospital, and Centre Parcs was meant to be for 'closure' and moving on!

Thanks 4madboys, that was what I was wondering, whether it's to do with the bruising. And to everyone else, having been through what I have over the last year, believe me I would be back in GOSH like a shot, and have been several times, when I've been worried about him. I have watched him like a hawk all week and will never fully relax, for the rest of my life. Any other symptoms and I would have had him back up to London for an MRI straight away, but as I say, he's been fine. This makes me think it's the bruising. I'm a bit Sad if I've come across as uncaring, as we went to hell and back a year ago, and I have nursed him back to health ever since.

Yes, would probably ring GOSH rather than go to local A & E because if they want a scan, gosh would rather do it.

I apologise if my post was harsh but if you read back your first post it did come across as very blasé ... Also if you wanted honest advice the info in your second post was really important .

minxthemanx · 25/02/2012 21:18

Yes i was a bit vague in first one, sorry. It would be very easy to panic and be neurotic over everything (inwardly I am), but I have to stay a bit cool and sensible for him - he is very over-anxious about his health, and I've tried not to make a big deal about this bump for his sake. I'll speak to gosh in the morning.

ring the hospital for advice then but like you say he is fine in himself so that is good. like i say my boys have had similar, i think its something to do with granulation of the tissue and there IS a name for it but i cant remember, i may have to phone my mum just to ask her again!

actually its like a haematoma? a collection of blood or something but it is worth checking out.

kazkiss · 25/02/2012 21:21

I am sure he will be fine hun as you said it was over a week ago the lump might just be a bit of trapped blood under the skin that can't go anywhere.

kazkiss · 25/02/2012 21:22

Yep haematoma would explain it

4madboys · 25/02/2012 21:27

i did just phone my mum btw Blush who was like WHY are you asking Confused anyway its a collection of blood and it kinds of goes jelly like and will feel like a small hard lump, and it dispersed over time, but can take a while. its still worth getting him checked out tho :)

minxthemanx · 25/02/2012 21:45

Thanks so much - yes I'm sure it's a little haematoma. I'll speak to gosh anyway tomorrow, in case they want to check it. Thanks for your help.

Apart from the bump hope it went really well at Centre Parks! Did you have a good time as a family?

EmmaCate · 25/02/2012 21:58

My DS fell last week, into the leg of a chest of drawers with his forehead. Didn't cut but still has scar-like tissue over the wound (seems like a crush wound?).

He still has a little bump. Will not help you, but just to know you're not alone. Hope your DS is fine; well done for everything you've coped with.

minxthemanx · 26/02/2012 08:38

Hi Random, yes we had a good time as a FAMILY! Still struggling on with DH and couples counselling. Things had been improving a bit, but then had a set back. This weekend am writing him a list of 'things that have to change or I'm out.' Sheesh.

Took DS1 to the children's ward at our hospital this morning, (we have a special card that bypasses A & E!) - long wait but Dr checked him out with all the usual neuro obs, and said he's fine. Like you said, it's a haematoma, and nothing to do with the aneurysm. He spent the afternoon at cricket training, so is clearly fine! Thanks for your comments, ladies. One day I'll stop panicking.

OP posts:
4madboys · 26/02/2012 19:35

oh thats good news :) so it will just fade away over a time, it does take a while tho.

and as a mother you will never stop panicking, but hopefully you will get more relaxed etc, its no wonder you are on guard but with all the sport etc he does he sounds a very healthy happy boy :)

minxthemanx · 26/02/2012 19:59

Quite astonishing, when he was critically ill in intensive care at gosh for 3 days a year ago. We were told he may not make the night. So I'm sure my local hospital have me down as a neurotic mother, after taking him today, but I'd rather be safe!
