Can a 12 year old (almost 13) take it?

I have been prescribed it for heavy periods but dd is really suffering today - she can't move without flooding.

Can I give her half or one of mine?

Thanks

My fourteen year old sister was prescribed it for heavy periods (and she is v small and slight so probably nearer the size of the average 12 year old at that time). I would only give a half or even a quarter of a tablet, personally, depending on how much she weighs.

I really wouldn't.

Call your out of hours GP and get some advice, if you tell them you have the medication (I can't be arsed trying to spell it), they might then say it's ok to give her.

It sounds horrible poor thing.

Thanks guys - she's 5'2 and a size 12 so adult woman sized.

Won't just in case - waiting for a call back from NHS direct

You need to establish the underlying cause of the problem. Would not give her medication that has been prescribed for you.

I would ask your GP to refer you to a gynaecologist even though she is very young. Twelve years old is not actually too young for anything like endometriosis to start. That can also cause heavy bleeding and or pain to arise.

Let us know how you get on attila

Poor thing 12 is so young to be having such heavy periods, I didn't have any periods until I was 14!

mumofjust1 · 25/02/2012 19:24

Thanks Atilla and Chipmunk

Spoke to a nurse who said to monitor how many pads she goes through in the next 24 hours and to call the GP Monday or pop to ooh service at the hospital if it gets worse.

It's horrible to see her so uncomfortable, I thought half a tablet might ease it slightly for her, I know I shouldn't give her anything not prescribed for her.

She started her periods just a couple of months before her 10th birthday Sad she copes well with them but last 2 months and now this month have been very heavy.

Regardless of how she goes over the weekend I shall call the Gp on Monday.

Thanks again for your replies

Sounds like a good plan. I hope it eases off.

happygilmore · 25/02/2012 20:01

ibuprofen should help to ease the flow a bit

readyforno2 · 25/02/2012 20:07

I started at 10 and ended up on the pill at 13 because of really heavy periods and horrible pains. I sympathise with your/her situation. Why not try a warm bath??
