On Sunday evening I cleaned our bathroom with Cillit Bang. Within 30 minutes my airways were very inflamed. I was ill all day Monday and unable to speak yesterday afternoon. This morning it has finally subsided , but I have an absolutely appalling headache and am going to lie down when my husband comes home form work after lunch. Please consider avoiding this product if you have any history of respiratory disorders. Someone else may be even more seriously affected.

actually that goes for any fumey cleaning product that is used in difficult to air rooms.

ShirleyO · 22/02/2012 09:43

That's why you should always open a window before using any of these sort of products.

Is this the first time you've used Cillit Bang?

hazeyjane · 22/02/2012 09:45

We avoid anything with bleach because it is bad for people with respiratory issues also things with a lot of perfume in seems to affect dds.

We use Method stuff and Ecover bathroom spray (which is fantastic!)

Hope you feel better soon - try to get some fresh air and keep the windows open.

Blobbybobs · 22/02/2012 09:46

Never used it before. You're absolutely right, I should have opened the window, but it was a mad rush to clean on Sunday evening. I had pneumonia a few years ago and my chest has never been right since. I just did not realise how strong this product is. Does anyone know if Ecover products are safer?

Thanks Hazeyjane, that's answered my question.

ecover works on citric acid basis, so is not fumey and doesn't contain harsh chemicals. still works well, though.

ShirleyO · 22/02/2012 09:53

No, it's awful Blobby - it's horrible to find yet another thing you react to.

Hope you start feeling better soon. It might be a combination of a little bug as well - the headache is odd.

Blobbybobs · 22/02/2012 09:53

Thanks mouse, will send DH for some later.

i get a headache from the perfume they use in these cleaners, also from air fresheners and fabric conditioner - i guess it must be a particular chemical which triggers it, maybe it is in cillit bang too

Blobbybobs · 22/02/2012 10:08

Thanks Shirley, I think I got the headache from using my inhalers in response to it. I'm on 3 separate types and although they work well, they do give me an almighty headache.

Hazeyjane, I am starting to think that chemicals are grossly overrated - it is surprising the effect they can have on your health. I think some people are just more sensitive to these things.
