LUMP ON BACK OF NECK WHERE GLANDS ARE... SHOULD i GO SEE THE DOC?

I think I'm turning into a hypochondriac
I really don't have all that much time to go and wait for an appointment so thought I just throw up the question here before I 'bother' my GP...

Ok for the last week I've noticed a lump at the side back of my neck where the glands generally are when ill and swollen. It's a hard lump and does not hurt to the touch. HOwever there is sort of slight pain in the surrounding area... is it just glands? I'm just wondering cause if I'm run down should both sides be 'knotted'?

Cheers

is it sore?

I have a similar lump on my neck there but is is one of those that 'moves' slightly if I push on it. It dosn't hurt as such but is sometimes uncomfortable, especially if I am run down or have a cold. Apparently it is the bodies reaction to an infection eg cold or even something as simple as a spot!

Nothing to worry about in my case, unless it gets bigger and harder, so doc says.

However I was crapping myself for ages over it so do go to the docs to ease your mind.

the lump itself not really
just the surrounding area seems in a dull pain

biglips · 26/01/2006 11:20

MrsBigD · 26/01/2006 11:23

I'll wait and see what happens then for the next few days.

I got a lump on my lump before Christmas and mentioned it to the Doc in passing when taking dd for some infection or other. He took it really seriously and I ended up having blood tests and seeing a lump specialist within a week! Even with that speed, the lump had gone by the time I got to see the specialist and I felt like a real idiot. However, the point I'm trying to make, is that lump specialist said that the lymph gland is effectively the toilet of your immune system (nice), and it often gets lumps when your system has been innundated with bugs - I pointed out that I had had a really bad cough a couple of weeks before and he said it was probably a reaction to that. Suffice to say, he pointed out that it if was a lump that either increased in size or had stayed there for at least 2 weeks, he would expect to do some tests - and that my GP had over-reacted. (Which is nicer than the other way round!).

Sorry - I got a lump on my NECK - no lumps on lumps here! Must start to preview messages before I click!

yes forgot to mention that i did have blood tests x 2 as well.

MrsBigD · 26/01/2006 12:10

oh forgot to mention that the bump from the lump is visible when e.g. looking into the mirror...

I had a lump behind my ear at the top of my jawline. It was firm and mobile but gave no pain. Turned out to be a (benign) tumour on the parotid (?) gland and I had to have it removed. Of course, I was cr*pping myself about it!

MrsBigD, maybe you should got to the doc and enquire about a chicken pox vaccine. I would if I had never had it! Don't want it in adulthood. My DH hasn't had it either and I suggsted that he might want to do this, but he hasn't done it. So, if the kids get chicken pox, and then he gets... it won't be my fault!

uwila · 26/01/2006 12:48

No idea about the bump btw. Might call NHS direct to start with. See what they say.

MrsBigD · 26/01/2006 14:06

I'd rather have an immunity test first prior to having the chicken pox jab, but I don't think they do that over here do they?

Could be something to do with the lymph nodes? Some sort of sign you are fighting off an infection..? See a doctor and put your mind at rest!
