He is absolutely miserable, will only sleep laying on top of me and wakes up crying if i put him down.

I took him to the doctor yesterday who couldn't see anything really wrong with him, but I don't have too much confidence.

He has a bit of a cough and cold but not really bad. He also has a sore part behind one of his bottom teeth (didn't notice until after we had seen the doctor), could this be causing the problem?

Is it normal ot have a high temperature for such a long time with a cold or flu, or is this a sure sign that he has an infection somewhere?

i would phone the doctors again and get him checked out, can you see a different doctor? is he on calpol to help with his temperature? has he been getting worse since monday? if so i'd definetly think it was a sign of infection. also with a temperature remember to keep on top of the fluids.

if his temp has been that high for that long i'd be tempted to take him down to a&e tbh

zephyrcat · 26/01/2006 14:24

Does his temperature go down at all if you give him calpol or similar?

Either way I would take him back to docs today or if you can't get an appt then to a&e just to get him checked over.

A fever is a sign that his body is fighting something so could well be a sign of an infection that needs treating.

Hope he's ok x

The crying when you lie him down sounds like an ear infection, apparently the pressure in their ear builds up more when they lie down, hance they wake and cry (has happpened to my 19mo DS a few times) Did the doc look in his ears? If not go back to docs, some are reluctant to give anti biotics for ears but IME it has sorted the problem v quickly. If it is his ears could try propping the cot up to help him sleep and jkeep dosing with calpol and ibuprofen (you can give both together)

Hope that ramble is of some help

Also meant to say trust your instincts. MY DS has only had a high temperature when properley ill and have taken him to the docs, but friend has a dd of the same age who's temp seems to shoot up if anything is remotely wrong - teeth, cold, cough etc. Often lasts a few days.

donnie · 26/01/2006 14:49

I really sympathise, dd2 has been like this for a cople of days too, temp nearly 39 and ultra miserable....she is 8 months. Last night I gave her some medised and it did give her a good night's sleep, suitable from 3 months.Lots of horrid germs going about at the moment.

THank you so much for your replies. I did read them but didn't manage to reply!

We were going to take ds to the doctor this morning if he didn't show any improvement and were ready to take him to a&e if he got worse, but his temperature had finally gone down this morning ! A big relief.

He slept for hours yesterday calpol didn't seem to be helping much so I gave him something different(similar to ibuprofen).

How much Calpol can you give? we have just been giving the minimum (2.5mls) as recommended for his age, but its the same amount that you give a 2mt old!)

I have also decided that next time we will try a different doctor, the one we have been seeing doesn't give me much confidence!

I am suffering now as I have stayed off work to be at home with him, but I had to come in today so dh is at home with ds. I am missing ds so much !

Sorry he's not been well Leo, glad he seems better now though. tbh we always used the suppositories (Acetalgine, 125mg , I think) on dd when she was little as they seem to work faster and were more powerful than Calpol, which often dribbled out aagin. Think you can have even more strong ones after the age of one. Once you get over the anal thing the benefit makes it worthwhile !

leogaela · 27/01/2006 11:03

Thanks LIZ, I gave him Inflamac which is quite strong. The trouble is that any up the bottom medication gives him diarrhea (sp?), but it does get him back to normal until it wears off but then he completely crashes again afterwards. However I think it may really have done him some good and next time I won't be so worried about giving him stronger stuff.
