Bad cough since December and UP ALL NIGHT! Help meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

dd2, 17 months, has had a cough on and off since December, been yoyoing back and forth to the docs. Just finished a course of antibiotics but it is now worse then ever, wheezing and really upset.

And up all night long last night, cough cough cough. Things are tense in the Olive household with me and dh competing on the fixed smile (un)happy parent front.

Doc has examined her again this morning and said there is nothing on her chest, doesn't want to give more anti's (I agree).

Any tips on what I can do to ease her suffering? Have been told Olbas Oil, is this on blankets or in bowls of water?

Help me, I want to run away.

Ta

xx

Is it accompanied by snottiness? I would prop her cot up at one end if you haven't already. Phone books work for this. Also I smear Vick on her sheets.

When ds is like this he has Olbas oil on his pillow and snuffle babe on his chest and it helps alot.

He is a bit of an addict though now and asks for his oil even when he is well.

If it's a dry cough at night time only it could be Asthma? Did your Dr mention this?

oliveoil · 26/01/2006 10:21

lots of snot and now has eye infection as well (due to general snot and bunged-upness acc to doc).

Has Yellow pages under cot legs and pillow. But rolls about so not usually where I have placed her iyswim.

Cranberry - dh is asthmatic

Is it hereditary?

It could be asthma yes. Dd2 is asthmatic and when she has a cold she coughs all night long for a few days until the effects of upping her inhaler start to take effect.

I would definatly ask him to consider asthma next time you take her.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 26/01/2006 10:26

Asthma shows itself in the form of a nasty cough in my DD. Does she cough all day or just at night?

Cranberry · 26/01/2006 10:27

My ds got hayfever for the first time last summer, as do I and that's when his asthma started. I think if one of you has allergies then it is very likely. I'm surprised they didn't check this? It seems to be very common these days although many youg children grow out of it. Mr GP says a dry nightime only cough is a classic symptom of Asthma. You could call your GP and mention it, they seem quite happy to hand out inhalers these days, try it for a couple of nights if the cough stops then you'll know. It won't harm your ds in any way. A friend of mine has had the same problem with her dd2, now she's on her inhaler peace has resumed

all day and night at the mo

But so happy in herself, bless her, eating and drinking ok, chirrupping away in the waiting room at the docs.

Would she have an inhaler at her young age?

Yes they have a new one now for very young children that's excellent. It's like a very small oxygen mask with a tube attached. You squirt the Ventolin in and your dd just breathes in normally. Very easy to use, don't worry about it.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 26/01/2006 10:50

My Dd had an inhaler from 1 year old with mask and spacer. She wasnt dead keen on it at first but it only took a few weeks.

leogaela · 26/01/2006 11:01

Is the air in the room where she is sleeping too dry? Hang some wet towels or something in the room to keep the air moist.

oliveoil · 26/01/2006 14:27

Room - have turned the radiator off but it is a cold room anyway, not sure is she will be too cold.

Dh didn't mention asthma to the doc but reckons it can't be that as she has a bad cold as well. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Have got some Olbas Oil and will put it in bowl of water before she goes to bed.

Met friend for lunch and had red wine...now want to thud my head on the desk. We compared eyebags and sob stories.
