Can Aptimil Forward cause constipation?

Recently changed dd's formula up to the next stage one (Aptimil First to Aptimil Forward with more Iron) and since dd's nappies have changed. Sorry for TMI but they have gone from one pretty full, loose nappy a day to about 6 small clay-like offerings a day which she strains to produce. I couldn't call it constipation really but it's not "normal".
Can anyone advise me on this? Should I go back to Aptimil First?

I remember an HV told me that the second stage SMA could make that happen, so im only gueesing that the same might be true for aptimal.

She suggestes if it was a problem using some first / breast milk and some of the next stage!

Iron supplaments can cause constipationa dn greeny stools. This is not abnormal, just unpleasent (ALthough have no idea how much iron is in it) My ds get constipated with any kind of fromula having been b fed .was their a reason for changeing?

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that all next stage milks were just a sneaky marketing tactic to allow companies to advertise their brand (they can't advertise formula so developed follow on milk which they can advertise). I understood that it is not necessary to change to it at all - it's only benefit being the brand advertising to the company, and none to the baby - I would go back to the first milk.

How old is DD?

NotQuiteCockney · 26/01/2006 09:20

The high iron formulas a) aren't necessary and don't help your baby - it's a marketing scam, essentially, and b) cause constipation.

BTW, the definition of constipation isn't about frequency of movements, it's about consistency. If she's straining, and the poos are hard, that's constipation. It's not particularly dangerous, but it's not pleasant, and can cause anal fissures.

I'd go back to Aptimil First.

agree with nqc

Squarer as far as i understand

1st stage milk and 2bd satge milk are different cause 1 is made form curds and one from whey... which is why they feel fuller for longer and is for nuhgrier babies.

The follow on milk from 6months + have more iron cause after 6 months the babies stores of iron have rum out (obvioulsy a good diet would mean that supplementing the iron this way would be unnecesary!)

the milks for children over 1 are IMO a con.... cause by 1 they (should be) eating normally and can have cows milk anayway!

I wasn't referring to hungry baby formula NannyL - I was referring to anything other than first milk. Hungry baby formula is classed as a first milk as it contains the same nutrients but is a casein base as opposed to a whey base - and also cannot be advertised.

Thanks everyone, I will change back to First. Had no problems on that. Didn't know it was a scam!!!
I make baby food (when she'll eat it that is...)with broccoli and iron-rich foods in anyway so this should be enough?

Thanks for your help and advice, very much appriciated!
