To go to the loo a few times in the night.

I keep reading on here how it's unusual or strange for an adult to get up and go to the loo in the night.

I know my SIL has an issue about me going at night when I stay at her house and it is often commented on when I stay at my mother's and friends.
I try to be quiet, I really do, but I wondered if it really is that unusual.

I am not pregnant, I am on a number of drugs but I've always needed to pass water in the night.

I probably go about twice and I drink nearly a pint of water at night as well.

I'm not diabetic either.

Anyone else wee a lot at night? Or think this is strange?

I usually get up once a night, always have!

UrsulaBuffay · 18/02/2012 23:08

I piss like a horse

bejeezus · 18/02/2012 23:13

2/3 times a night, for as long ad I can remember. No ailments or medication

squeakytoy · 18/02/2012 23:15

For those of you that need to get up in the night, how many hours sleep are you having? I go to the loo immediately before bed, and sleep for approx 7 hours.. never any longer, and I go again when I get up. I never wake up in the night needing to go.

bejeezus · 18/02/2012 23:22

Yeah same as you, 6 or 7 hours sleep

We think this thread probably belongs in Health, so we're going to move it there.

Is there a difference betwween Health and General Health? Confused

Personally I'm once a night and 3 times a day. Which seems enough to me tbh.

BreadForMyBREADGUN · 18/02/2012 23:52

Reckon there is nothing normal about a grown adult getting up twice a night to use the loo. My4yo can go 12 hours, I'm sure you lot can

Unless you're verging on the middle-elderly side of things, then you have no excuse- roll over, go back to sleep and ignore it Grin

(you'd never survive at glasto...)

Ah lots of responses!

Bread - Funny enough have been to Glastonbury a number of times.

I am on steroid medication which may account for thirst but I'm pretty sure I've always had a few night time pees all my life prior to meds. I'm so surprised when people say they sleep through a whole night and don't go. Mind you, my husband doesn't go in the night.

I'm pretty sure things have got worse since my c-section so may have some issues in that department.

I very rarely need to get up for a wee in the middle of the night.
I always have a glass of water at my bedside but very rarely need it. I only get up through the night if I drink a lot of fluid shortly before going to bed.

If you need to drink a pint of water during the night it could be that you are dehydrated and not drinking enough through the day. Are the drugs you are on a factor? When my cousin was on antiD's they made her very thirsty. As a result she drank loads and needed the toilet loads.

OH gets up more through the night, but he was diagnosed with irritable bladder, so perhaps you may have it as well.

I do think that getting up 2 or three times a night isn't usual though.

orangeflutie · 19/02/2012 16:36

The thing is everyone varies. It depends how much you drink in the day, whether you've drunk alcohol, how many children you've had etc ...

Interesting point about antiDs. I've been on them for a good couple of years now and generally only have a wee once a night. Before I was on them I had to wee usually twice a night but I have had four DC and I slept quite lightly. The ones I take are sedating so I think I sleep deeper now. They also dry me out a bit so I don't need to go to the loo so much.

Pandsbear · 20/02/2012 10:42

For ages (years I think looking back) I had to get up in the night for a wee. Also, I always knew where the toilets were in shops/out and about. Never thought anything of it - it was just 'me' and used to cause much amusement (but I was very aware of thinking 'oh no, how embarassing I need to go again...').

I then had to have laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis last October and surgeon discovered a big patch of endo on my bladder. I now don't need to get up in the night, am not endlessly going to the loo during the day either. It is a complete revelation! Not saying this is the same for the OP, just that sometimes there are reasons for needing to wee more than other people.

So, apart from going GP, is there any advice?

This week has been a bad one for me, getting up really often to pee. It might have something to do with the two litres of water I have started to drink during the day, but I try to avoid drinking late evening. What time is the latest for a drink do you think? 8pm? 9pm?

Someone recommended on another thread that you can retrain your bladder, by holding it in for longer during the day, but I always thought that holding it in too long could do you some damage? Hmm

Avenged · 21/02/2012 20:39

Could you be diabetic at all? Could you speak to your GP about it next time you have an appointment/make one? The thirst and peeing a lot can be a couple of the symptoms of diabetes. You could well just have an overactive bladder, but it's best to see your GP about this to find out what's going on.

niknakpaddywhack · 21/02/2012 20:59

Over the last few years I have had to get up to go to the loo 2/3/4 times during the night and go almost every hour during the day.

When I mentioned it to my GP whilst seeing her about something else, she said I needed to retrain my bladder. It does involve holding on for longer and longer periods of time before you go to the toilet. I haven't really had any much success Sad.

However, I have been diagnosed with endometriosis (now treated) -and adhesions, which are causing me quite a bit of pain and, reading some other posters views, may be related to weeing frequently Confused.

So Thingiebob perhaps your problem IS a result of your C-section?
