She's had it before but then was back to normal within a few days. This time she hasn't pooed properly in about 10 days, she is doing hard pellet poos and finds these very painful poor thing.
She is formula fed and has solids twice a day. I offer her water/juice a few times a day but she doesn't have more than a few sips.
I've tried massaging her stomach, and lifting her legs up to help her go.
Is there any foods/fruit i can give her is puree/mashed form that would help as she doesn't take much juice.
Also how long should I leave it before I take her to the doctors
thanks in advance.

My DS had some issues but making sure he has one carton of formula a day, all other feeds are powder formula, helped him?

But maybe you should call NHSDirect for advice?

amyjade · 25/01/2006 20:10

I found dried apricots or prunes worked well.

jennifersofia · 25/01/2006 20:13

Soak some prunes and give her the juice, then a bit of the pureed prunes mixed with some applesauce. Fig is also good, same as above if dried, or just cooked and pureed if fresh. As much liquid as you/she can manage.
My DD1 had problems when she was little - it is so heartbreaking to hear them cry because it hurts! Good luck.

mrsright · 25/01/2006 20:14

I soak a dried prune or dried apricot in a little boiled water over night (in the fridge) and puree it with the water and add it to ds breakfast each morning.this seems to be working fine for ds aged 11 mnths.

Yummymummy24 · 25/01/2006 20:17

Go to docters tomorrow, they say three days b4 getting help. My ds1 had it for about three yrs, consultant etc. All soft fruit except bananas is good, apples are bad. Prune yoghurt is good i think activia do it. But you really need some lactulose for about a week i'd say. The bowel changes to a balloon shape instead of a squeezy tube after a few days of constipation so it won't be able to get the poo out now without help. Massage is really good but only in clockwise direction, other way actually makes it worse. Good luck xx

pureed fruit of any sort and plenty juice 50/50 pure friut juice. Natural sugar draws water into the gut and help to soften things up. laculose is suitable for babies but would not use it unless you speak to your hv/gp.
What food are you giving?

aragon · 25/01/2006 20:46

Hi,

I'd have a word with your GP. Most areas now have constipation clinics for children run at the local hospital by the paediatrician and nurses who specialise in dealing with babies and children who suffer with constipation. Ask your GP if your DD could be referred. She might just need some Lactulose which is a very gentle laxative to help her get rid of what's left in her bowel so she can begin pooing normally again.

MistyEyed · 25/01/2006 20:47

It sounds as if she is not drinking enough by far. She should be having constant access to water.

we recently had same problem with dd aged 6 months we gave her the baby organix ready made prune porridge, comes in box of four tubs they sell it in sainsburys and gave her apricots also added a little extra water to any food i pureed for her for a few days. Doc has referred us to paediatrician as they can prescribe the lactulose before age 1.

Hope this helps!

kreamkrackers · 26/01/2006 15:25

my dd was put on to lactulose and glycerine supposeteries from 6 months. the dietician says lactulose works best with plenty of fluids though. the glycerine supposeteries are to soften it from the other side when constipation is really bad and lactulose acts like a natural fibre. lactulose is very high in sugars though and there isn't a sugar free version. dd was on 5 to 10mls twice a day from 6months to 12months. after 12months was put on to 10 to 15mls twice a day. now at 20 months she has 15 to 20mls twice a day.

madmarchhare · 26/01/2006 15:33

A lot of people wont like this and I wasnt sure, but after trying juice, fruit etc.. to no avail, I decided to give it a go before reaching for the lactulose.

Just one day of organic brown sugar in warm water did the trick.

madmarchhare · 26/01/2006 15:35

Just to add, it was obviously a one off (the constipation that is) and I would have seen GP if it became clear that it was more than that.

Mercy · 26/01/2006 15:57

Kiwi fruit(pips removed) mashed up with a small piece of banana worked within 24 hours for ds, cut down on the milk give as much diluted juice as possible. Agree with the person who said go to GP sooner rather than later - in your case today or tomorrow!

izzybiz · 26/01/2006 16:03

my Dd has suffered with this on and off for along time. once she literally had one stuck foe 45 mins was screaming in pain, Dp had to squeeze her bum and it actually shot out with a pop.
they soon get to know that pooing hurts and hold it in which obviously makes it worse. my doc gave her lactulose to use untill she got used to going without pain, its a godsend!

BudaBabe · 26/01/2006 16:29

DS had it when a baby and dodc recommend adding mofr water to the formula at each feed - an oz more water in each bottle basically.

The brown sugar in water is an old old remedy and WORKS! But poss best on younger babies.

Poor thing - hope it gets sorted.

me23 · 26/01/2006 16:44

Thanks so much for all your suggestions, they have been really helpful.
Today I gave her fresh orange juice 50 juice/50 water and she suprized me by actually drinking some of it, I also gave her mashed apricot but she hardly ate any.

Anyway 1 1/2 after juice I went to change her nappy and she finally did a poo. I had to hold her bum cheeks apart, the poo hurt her at first but the rest of it seemed ok didn't look too hard either.

so I'll see how she goes if she still is constipated I will take her doctors. Sorry if I gave too much information there!
Thanks again.

if it's hard coming out rub some vaseline on her bum which helps it slide out easier!

muminlondon · 26/01/2006 21:40

Oh poor thing! I was reading this thread and was going to suggest orange juice or prune juice - if she doesn't drink it from a cup you could just spoon it into her, or squirt it with a syringe. It might also be an idea to keep up the juice for a while (pureed pear seems to work quite well too) to keep her soft, so it doesn't hurt her and put her off wanting to go.

Hanjan · 27/01/2006 21:52

my dd had exactly the same same problem on and off since she was about 5 months (is now 11 months) and , like other people on this thread fed her the Organix prune porridge -worked liked a charm!

icklmum · 27/01/2006 22:37

syrup of figs, dont need much and works a charm
