Any dentists about?

I have a pain in my mouth, at the back, almost where the wisdom tooth used to be but not quite. On the inner (palate) side rather than the outer (cheek) side. Everytime I swallow and my tongue pushes against this part, I get pain radiating to the back of my head. Like nerve pain I guess. Very painful and nurofen isnt touching it.

It started off mildly, and I assumed stress was making me clench my teeth at night, causing the pain. But it has got worse. I saw an emergency dentist today (mine doesnt work fridays) and he could locate the pain but said he didnt think it was linked to the teeth so I should take nurofen, go to my own dentist on Monday and ask to be referred to a specialist.

That has kind of worried me.

Any ideas?

I'm not a dentist. Have you recently had a cold? It might be sinus pain. I had what I thought was pain from teeth and dentist said it was this. Needed antibiotics to clear it. In the mean time hang over a bowl of steam and breath in.

Hi there, no recent colds. I did think perhaps sinus pain but it so localised and hurts if I press it so not sure.

I'm a dentist. Do you have any swelling or any other symptoms? Whereabouts are you pressing to get a pain response?

EustaciaVye · 17/02/2012 17:44

Hi AKissIsNotAContract

I dont believe I have any swelling. The place it hurts is at the top of the back of my mouth following the curve of my teeth but further back than where they end (a little further than where the wisdom tooth would be. Every time I swallow my tongue touches it and it hurts, or if I prod it with a finger it really hurts Hmm.

Well I agree with the dentist you saw earlier that it doesn't sound tooth related. How long have you had the pain for? There are definitely no other symptoms apart from the pain?

EustaciaVye · 17/02/2012 18:51

No other symptoms except for the pain. I've had the symptoms for about 2 weeks.

Are you prodding bone or soft palate?

EustaciaVye · 17/02/2012 18:55

It isnt soft palate so I think it is bone, although the gum is quite tender.

Dentist today said he doesnt think it is teeth so to go to GP.
