Weird gross throat thing, any ideas?

Sometimes, half an hour or more after I eat, I feel the need to clear my throat, like there's phlegm in it. And instead of phlegm, I cough up some of my food. It's not been in my stomach (no acid), it's just been stuck in the back of my throat.

Should I be worried? Or should I just carry on ignoring this? It doesn't seem to be getting worse, I don't have any problems swallowing etc.

Reflux?

NotQuiteCockney · 25/01/2006 17:59

Isn't reflux acid coming up, the same as heartburn really? I had that in pregnancy, this isn't like that - there's no acid.

Does it make any difference if you drink lots of water with your food?

Dinker · 25/01/2006 18:02

I'd see your GP

NotQuiteCockney · 25/01/2006 18:03

Hmm, not sure. It's always chunky sorts of things that come back, never soup, always apples.

I probably should talk to my GP. It did start only a few years ago, but doesn't seem to have gotten worse or anything.

Do you have pain when you eat/swollow?

NotQuiteCockney · 25/01/2006 18:22

No, nothing like that. I do get a sore throat pretty often, with colds, but generally, my throat is fine.

Are you prone to chest infections?

chapsmum · 25/01/2006 18:39

There are a few things that it could be. Some people have 'pockets' or patrial blockages (Strictures) in the food pipe that food. When food is swolled it can get caught and is refluxed. Sometimes it is completly harmless and sometimes it can be the symptom of underlying gastro oesophageal Reflux disease. (which isn't as dramatic as it sounds, it is prolonged hearburn)
Other possibilities include something called a nutracker oesophagus, though this is much less likely as it usually gives you pain when swallowing/digesting food.
It is worth seeing you GP over as certain conditions of the oesophagus have the potential to become quite nasty if left untreated. Hope this dosn't worry you, it's prob harmless but better to be safe than sorry

lol

I get this and it is gross (but I am 26 weeks pg)

I think it is reflux (it has definitely made it to tum)

gaviscon helps - try it and see, make sure you get gaviscon advcance, normal gaviscon is hopeless

Dinker · 25/01/2006 19:08

Just what i was thinking chapsmum. I dont think its just reflux.

NotQuiteCockney · 25/01/2006 19:21

Mine has definately not made it to tum.

Ok, will talk to GP.

I have had it for a few years (I think) without change, but yeah, I know bad thing can happen in the oesophagus, a friend died of cancer of the oesophagus, years ago. Happened really quick.
