Is this sinusitis?

I had flu two weeks ago, knocked out good and proper for a week. Fog finally lifted last weekend, but have been left very congested - lots of really vile coloured goo coming out of my nose and coughing up (sorry TMI!)

I also have pain in my cheeks, around my nose and right through my jaw to my ears and mouth. Teeth and gums seem particularly sensitive too. It hurts like hell in the middle of my head if I bend to pick something up.

Is this something that will eventually go away or do I need to get pills/take action to rid? It's not something I suffer from particularly so maybe I just need to be patient...

BTW - the rest of the family all had the flu too and none of them have got this.

It sounds like it.

When I feel like this, I take a decongestant (usually a flu prep with paracetamol + decon), and it usually works.

AnonymousBird · 16/02/2012 10:46

I have some cold remedy tablets, which do contain paracetamol but not sure if they have decongestant as well.... sounds like I need a trip to the chemist for decongestant. Has to be worth a try!

Any particular brand you find good? Thanks by the way.

Something like Daynurse is good. Any cold medication should contain the decongestant, which will be a drug such as psuedoephidrine.

Thanks - I'll check the ones I have then for that. I was taking them when I had the flu, but took so many I didn't want to carry on with them any longer than necessary. Hopefully a couple of doses today might just help....

Appreciate the fast posting!

Let us know how you get on :)

Ibuprofen is better for sinusitis IME as it is an anti-inflammatory. Saline sprays are great as well- there is another thread on this today . You can get decongestant in a spray form . Lots and lots of steam also very good.
It is nasty but if it lingers the gp will give you an antibiotic.
I feel your pain as I get sinus problems all the time.

My tablets have Phenylephrine in them. Just taken two so will see what happens. I do also have Ibuprofen. Again, just took soooooo many during the flu that I had been trying not to take, but if it helps knock at least some of the head ache out then a couple more won't hurt....

I was hospitalized with flu last week and now been left with sinusitis just as you describe. I have been given antibiotics, a nasal spray and ibuprofen. Feel for you, its bloody horrible!

JasperJohns · 16/02/2012 23:15

I have just had it. First time for me and it was horrid.

Unspeakable green, foul tasting stuff, awful pressure & pain plus it felt like my teeth had moved! I went through 2 packs of Sudafed.

I got antibiotics over phone from gp. They took at least 3 days to kick in but after that - blessed relief!

AnonymousBird · 17/02/2012 10:23

Oh grief, sounds like I need antibiotics. I'm too late to get an appointment today. Sad. Monday, once kids back, will be easier.

"unspeakable green" is possibly the perfect description - completely covers it!

And yes, it feels like someone has just twisted my jaw and hit all my teeth with a hammer!!!

I did get some relief yesterday from a dose of cold and flu and later a dose of ibuprofen and I slept very well last night for the first time in ages, so will try same approach today and just pray it continues to ease over the weekend....

In addition to hard drugs I found that steaming my face over a bowl of hot water with some drops of eucalyptus oil on it really helped. I was a little sceptical when my GP suggested it but it helped to ease the pain and also made our living room smell comforting!
