Her nappy smells a little odd not offensive but maybe sweet. She seems fine otherwise but probably theething.

Any ideas?

It's not a different nappy, is it? I just know that I normally use Tescos ones, and had some Huggies (or possibly Pampers) free via Bounty (I think) whenever DS wees it smells of acetone (like nail varnish remover). Most offputting!

Go to Gp. I found this in my dd around the same age and it was a uti- no other symptoms but she did need antibiotics. Be warned though- they WILL need a urine sample

jessthecat · 25/01/2006 12:51

has she been drinking anything different?

drosophila · 25/01/2006 12:57

Not drinking anything different but she is beinbg breastfed so my diet may affect her.

How on earth do you take a sample?

You are given a plastic bag with sticky bits round it and tape it to her 'bits' then wait for it to be filled up. Took me aaagges as she kept pooping in it as well and they wouldn't accept it. Other option (they did this to dd in A+E last week) is to put a special pad inside her nappy then when she wees they syringe it out and put it in a bottle. Mmm!

I would definitely check it out if I were you.

I think when I had to do it with DD, I sat her on a potty and hoped for the best. She did do something, but when I took it in to the doctor she said it wasn't sterile enough, so you need to make sure you do it straight after a bath, when her bottom's nice and clean, and wash the potty out with boiling water before you use it. I seem to remember the hospital had some sort of inserts for nappies to catch wee, too (bit like a small sanitary towel) but it was a bit hit and miss! Hope you get it sorted, or that it turns out not to be a problem.

Just spoke to Doc surgery who said that funny smelling wee does not neccessairly mean an infection but to drop off a sample before tomorrow Noon for analysis. I was told that they only have the bog standard bottles that everyone uses and nothing special for babies. They are currently phoning a chemist to see if they have anything.

We don't have a potty so can't do that unless I can think of someone I could borrow one from.

Well I have to buy a bag in a chemist that is 2 miles away and I have another sick child but DP said he would get it on his way home from work. They don't seem too worried probably beca she is symptom free otherwise.

I have been giving her lots of fluids and the last nappy hardly smelt at all. They won't give her antibiotics until the results come back. If there are any medicial people about I have a (I had forgotten) urine collecting bag from when DS was little and wondered if it was still sterile. I think the use by date is Jan 04. Is that set in stone?
