Is it malabsorption due to inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's/ulcerative colitis)? The hospital should be able to give you advice.

At the moment they suspect it is the drugs I am on that has caused it (post cancer treatment). He mentioned it is usually associated with chrons but doesnt feel this is what I have.

Am waiting to hear back from hospital, the doctor was checking things out and getting back to me

I suspect (I'm not a medical expert) that once the drugs are out of your system then you shouldn't have a problem absorbing normally? I think you need to see a dietician to be honest. There's suppliments that you can take but you need professional help with this, it's easy to take too many vitamins which are toxic in large amounts so it's something which needs to be done very carefully. crohns is an auto immune disease. If the inflammation in your bowel is due to the drugs then it's very unlikely to be this. Your symptoms should pass once the drugs are out of your system and you've had the chance to heal.

Hi there.

I (currently) have malabsorption, due to coeliac's disease (am now gluten-free but it takes a couple of years for the gut to heal).

I think the best thing you can do is to eat really well - not necessarily loads of calories (unless you are underweight) but lots of healthy stuff to maximise your nutritional uptake.

If you know you are short of certain minerals/vitamins you can alter your diet to up your intake of these. So in my case I am v. short of iron and calcium, so now eat more red meat/green veg/dried apricots/almonds etc and have also doubled my dairy intake. A dietitian helped me put a plan together and I am going back to see her next month after I get the results of a bone density scan etc She will then advise on suppliments.

Something else to watch out for is that certain foods that where previously tolerated may now be difficult to digest. I can't eat many pulses at one sitting any more, likewise only small amounts of alcohol [sigh].
