What pain medication do you take and what for?

I take morphine and fentanyl for the severe chronic spinal pain due to an incomplete spinal cord injury and 3 burst vertebrae, spondylyosis, spondylothesis and spinal stenoisis. (I have other health problems and other medication, but this is what I take for my pain and spinal problems.

Tramadol for my CRPS and knackered arm. It also makes my 'good' arm feel better as it is complaining about doing everything

VivaLeBeaver · 11/02/2012 16:35

Backache,

I take,

Diclofenac
Gabypentin
Amyltriptelene
Oramorph
Cocodamol

Sometimes take diazepam.

I used to take tramadol but it made me a bit mad.

KalSkirata · 11/02/2012 16:42

tramadol for MS, spondylyosis, spondylothesis. I did try pregabalin but it made my brain mushy and piled on weight (which makes my spine worse)
I also take diazepam to sleep and reduce muscle spasms.

OP, did you get offered spinal fusion. I have but am pretty reluctant.

DarcieandSkysmum · 11/02/2012 16:43

I take
Adalat (Nifedipine) for Raynards.
Naproxen, Co-Codamol & Amitryptiline for severe joint hypermobility, fibromyalgia, Trochan teric bursitis & 2 lower bulging spinal discs.
Omeprazole for upper GI pain.

NearlyMrsCustardsHardHat · 11/02/2012 17:48

Currently on lightweight stuff for fibromyalgia: - Nortryptiline, Co-Dydramol and Diclofenac (only take the latter if desperate as plays havoc with my asthma) and take Diazepam when i get nerve spasms and end up with nerve pain in all 4 limbs. Also currently have a cortisone block in my cervical spine so thats stopped the nerve pain in my arms. Not entirely convinced I have Fibromyalgia in all honesty!

Have previously tried: Pregabalin, Codeine, Morphine, Amitryptiline, and tramadol to varying degrees of weight gain and asthma attacks!

Prefer to take nothing and finding B12 suppliments (1000mg a day - maximum dose from Holland and Barratt) is really helping.

Hi kalskirata,
I had a rod and screws and some bones fused (looks like a ladder on X-ray) in my spine from t7 - l5. That was for the burst fractures.
I'm awaiting more surgery to fuse the bones involved in the spondylyosis and spondylyothesis.

OP posts:
KalSkirata · 11/02/2012 21:29

whats it like? They want to fuse L5 to L2 initially as there's bi lateral fractures of the pars so little support for the discs. The thought of anywhere near my spine makes me feel sick.

sodapops · 11/02/2012 21:58

I take:-

Tramadol modified release
Amytryptiline
Nefopam
Paracetomol
Pregabalin
Codiene

I have severe SPD and Sacro-Illiac Dysfunction, Fybromyalgia and CRPS and I have torn something or other in my hip.

Reenypip · 12/02/2012 15:23

Kalskirata,
The rods and screws were for 3 burst unstabled fractures, i had some partial damage to spinal cord do that's why they did the op so no more damage was caused. This was due to an accident.
What you are describing is what I am waiting for to be done, mine is also bilateral of the pars too.
With my previous spine operation. (not related to spondylyothesis etc) they went through my back only and I have a scar from the bottom of my neck all the way down to my bum.
With the bilateral pars op I am waiting for they want to go through my abdomen as well as my back. I'm slightly more nervous as they are going to go through both my belly and back for this next op on my spine.

Reenypip · 12/02/2012 15:30

With my first spine op, straight after my accident, I don't remember anything for a couple of weeks as I was in intensive care.
With my second planned spine operation, and foot operation at same time, which I knew about, very painful at first, but unfortunately I caught the two superbugs MRSA which led to septacaemia and C. Diff. As well which made me seriously ill, since then I've also had meningitis, and I haven't recovered from it.

By the way, the incision they made from my neck all the way down to my bottom, is not the normal, this is because of the spinal injury I had. It's over 50cm long.

They said for the bilateral pars op I'm waiting for will be about 15cm on my back and 15cm on my belly as long as everything goes to plan.

Tramadol for 3 herniated disks, also gabapentin.

KalSkirata · 12/02/2012 18:09

through the belly? Good grief

Avenged · 12/02/2012 20:53

For my back pain I'm on:

Mycrogynon 30: (backache was even more painful during my periods)
Pregabalin: 50mg in morning and 75mg at night
Buprenorphine Patches 35mcg/hr: to be changed every 4 days
Celecoxib 100mg: 1 tablet in morning and 1 tablet before bed
Lanzoprazole 30mg: taken 1/2hr before breakfast and other tablets.

I was put on Fentanyl 12mcg, but it did nothing for me and the pain was horrendous while on it, so it actually got to the point where I was contemplating a walking stick. I rang the Pain Clinic, explained the situation and they told me that I should go on the Transtec patches, which takes over from where the Butrans 20mcg patch leaves off IYSWIM.

I have also been told, by the Rheumatoilogy Physio I saw for back exercises, that I'm moderately hypermobile and that doesn't help matters as the ligaments around the joints are quite loose and so aren't supporting the spine as well as needed. The problem is that if I don't stretch, I feel all cramped up and my back gets even more sore than it normally is.

mosschops30 · 12/02/2012 20:57

Does anyone know if you can take sertraline wirh Tramadol? Im a nurse but have no idea, diclofenac and paracetamol just not cutting it at the moment

LackaDAISYcal · 12/02/2012 21:10

is Tramadol a trade name for co-codamol? If so, then yes!

I currently take

Diclofenac and co-codamol as required
Amitryptaline at night to help sleep and for hypersensitivity to pain.
Naproxen when having a flare up
Have mixed connective tissue disorder (lupus/sjogrens symptoms) for which I take hydroxyhloroquine (but that isn't a painkiller as such) and fibromyalgia

LackaDAISYcal · 12/02/2012 21:14

Yikes Reenypip, that sounds like a lot to cope with :(

My pain isn't too bad in the grand scheme of things, but the constancy of it is so very draining.

I can only imagine a small part of what you must be dealing with.

Reenypip · 12/02/2012 23:13

That's just my spine problems, I have other chronic health conditions too

I've learnt to live life the best I am able to. The past is gone, cannot change it but can learn from it, the future is yet to come anything could happen, but the present is now, I live in the moment, I live right now.
Life is so precious.

That's my motto on life.

OP posts:
LackaDAISYcal · 12/02/2012 23:20

That's a great attitude Reenypip :)
I only got my dx 4 months ago and am just coming out of self pity mode and determined to make the best of things.

I have a recurrent MH problem as well but funny enough this has made me more determined to deal with the depression too!
