..It really hurt when i did a wee and the dull achey feeling i had in my lower back and tummy was, i thought, due to the fact that AF was on her way (should have arrived sunday).
Anyway, went to go to the gym this am and i felt so ill and so achey, i cant remember when my body felt so weak and tired actually, its a struggle to get up, so i gave the gym a miss but now i feel even worse!
Do you think this sounds like an infection rather than simple cystitis? Is there something i can get over the counter for this or is a trip to the drs?

Sorry to read that so many people have shared my experience with a kidney infection, but I am so relieved you are all posting here and backing up my message of getting to see a doctor today. I wouldn't have cystitis for more than 2 minutes before I would be on the phone to someone medical, such were my experiences of leaving it.

Nixz · 24/01/2006 13:31

what great ladies you all are, give yourselves a huge huggle from me

Yes Nixz, you will have to wee, but you should do nothing now but drink, drink, and drink between now and 3 o'clock, so weeing won't be hard for you!

If I were you, I would take a massive jug of water into the loo with me, sit down with a book and do nothing all afternoon but drink and wee.

WigWamBam · 24/01/2006 13:32

Nixz, take a fresh sample with you so they can do a dip test, but be prepared to pee in a bottle while you're there in case they want to send a sample off for analysis as well - they might do that so that they can chose the right antibiotic for your infection.

Hope you get on OK.

Nixz · 24/01/2006 13:32

ps. some of the aches are really weird, like i have pulled muscles in the backs of my legs, even my arms ache!
Am i ok to have a bath?

OP posts:
WigWamBam · 24/01/2006 13:33

Baths are fine, and a good idea - might ease the pain a bit.

Lonelymum · 24/01/2006 13:33

PS, if weeing is really painful, sit in a warm bath to do it. But, if you sit on the loo and just let it come out as it enters your bladder, that is marginally less painful than storing it up, even for five minutes.

Nixz · 24/01/2006 13:34

Lonelymum - my heart goes out to you, you must have really suffered with this in the past.
I have drank loads, about 5 glasses of water in the last hour.

I had a massive tumour on my kidney though Nixz - not a common thing at all (and only discovered when they did an exploratory op on me ). My only symptoms wer repeated cystitis and a couple of occasions when it became a kidney infection.

Since having the tumour removed, I have hardly had cystitis since but it still puts the fear of God into me. And Franny is right, the ABs become essential after a while. Also, I now only have one whole and a bit of my other kidney, so I suppose I can't take cystitis lightly even if I wanted to.

Lonelymum · 24/01/2006 13:38

PS keep drinking. Five glasses an hour sounds about right.

Nixz · 24/01/2006 13:39

Sheesh Lonelymum, what an awful shock that must have been for you.
I can understand your worries on this subject.

I will let you know, thanks for your support xx

I ended up beingg hospitalised with cystitis so bad it affected my kidneys, it was excruciating and I was bleeding badly from it. it's an underestimated problem.

Lonelymum · 24/01/2006 15:50

How did you get on Nixz?

Nixz · 24/01/2006 18:00

hi there.
White cells - so am on antibiotics for now, they have also sent a sample of my wee away and the results should be back in 3 days. Not quite sure why they have sent a sample away but feeling like i really dont care at the moment! Eugh
Its dd birthday tomorrow aswell and i just want to sleep and not ache anymore
sorry to moan, thanks everyone for your support, your all great xxxxx

OP posts:
Nixz · 24/01/2006 18:32

meant to say, i would have probably just put up with it for a while before i visited the drs, putting it down to a bit of cystitis, so thanks for all your advice.

SleepyJess · 24/01/2006 18:37

Nixz, they send the sample away so they can see what (or if any) bacteria is growing so that they can put on the the right antibiotic if necessary.

I have been prone to cystitis in the past also.

That's sounds awful Lonelymum! How long ago was it? And was it benign?

SJ x

Lonelymum · 24/01/2006 18:39

Glad to hear you have the anti biotics. You should feel better pretty soon - maybe by the end of tomorrow if not first thing.

Glad I could be of help. It is great to be able to pass on my hard won wisdom!

Happy Birthday to dd tomorrow BTW.

Lonelymum · 24/01/2006 18:42

SJ, it will be 20 years ago this coming Christmas and yes, it was benign in the end, but no-one had ever seen anything like it when they operated so the surgeon was obliged to remove much of my kidney as the likeliest scenario was that it was cancerous and it wouldn't come away cleanly. It had to be sent away for analysis and everyone was so relieved when the results came back (everyone except me, who was so ill I hadn't realised cancer was an option (I was internally bleeding to death before the op) and all I could think was they removed most of my kidney unnecessarily! You don't think very rationally when you are that ill! I am glad now that it wan't cancerous.

Twiglett · 24/01/2006 18:44

I had cystitis then got a kidney infection (still on 2nd course of anti-b's for it atm)

I think they send away sample to check which infection and which antibiotics it is susceptible to .. cultures take 48 hours hence the 3 day wait

Nixz · 24/01/2006 18:48

Lonelymum, what a terrible experience - i appreciate your urgency and advise!!!!!
I am off to bed, having an early night with dd, busy day tomorrow!
Thankyou all again ladiezzzzzz

QE2 · 24/01/2006 18:51

Nixz - really hope you start to feel better very soon.

Lonelymum, you can manage perfectly ok with one kidney as I am sure you know. dd had most of one of hers removed just before she was 3. She had been terribly ill since she was born with infection after infection which slowly killed off her kidney so they whipped it out.

Lonelymum · 24/01/2006 18:57

Nixz, enjoy an early night. It is what you most need, after the ABs, IMO.

My experience is very scary to talk about now, but it wasn't so scary for me at the time. I have the consolation of knowing that when you are very ill, you do tend to go into yourself and a lot of the pain and anxiety passes you by - well, it did me, anyway. Much worse at the time for my family.

Yes, I am surviving well on one and a bit kidney. I have had 4 children since then and was only monitored closely for the first pregnancy, but it went without any problems. I have only had cystitis a few times since my op too, but obviously, it is not a condition I would ever leave.
